Airport closed until the end of the investigation. Yes, my Friend was having a holiday there with his family. There is a Hydroplane Airshow ongoing, thus the helicopter was carrying a Russian flag for demonstration purposes. Update 1. Emergency health as well as fire services have been dispatched to the possible crash scene. Full on "Oh crap! Drop everything, jump into the fire truck and speed off with sirens blaring at insane speeds." That's how my Friend described it. Update 2. After ten minutes of circling around the Gelendzhik bay, the helicopters returned to the airport for a landing. Friend heard the engines straining very hard. Then it got cut off abruptly as smoke began billowing up. He is a mere kilometer from the possible crash. Thank you One Star bandit :) [link to www.vesti.ru] I hope they manage to rescue the pilot, or pilots alive. Update 1. Preliminary reports tell of three victims, two perished and one severely injured. The helicopter broke apart at the crash site. I will keep updating as more news flow in. Airport closed until the end of the investigation. Any thoughts of what could have gone wrong? I doubt the pilots would use an old and unmaintained helicopter for a public air show. If they had fallen on the crowds, there would have been many more victims. Nothing including sabotage can be ruled out, this is fairly close to Ukraine. Actually the trains from Moscow to Gelendzhik run 180 kilometers on Ukrainian territory before swinging back to Russia again. I believe he is still in shock. Here is some information about the Mi-8 craft that went down [link to aviation-safety.net] If any foreign minister begins to defend to the death a "peace conference," you can be sure his government has already placed its orders for new battleships and aeroplanes. |

Airport closed until the end of the investigation. Here is an eyewitness video from the aftermath of the crash. The first theories about this accident are coming in right now. Officials say there were a lot of wind gusts at the moment of the helicopter's landing. That might be the reason for this disaster. As always ambulances got to the scene with a delay, due to the bad organization of the event at the airport. That might have cost those two lives. I do hope the third person, who was heavily injured recovers. This is all part of a large jigsaw puzzle called Life. I am from Russia and helicopters don't fall down from the sky, bursting into flames every day here. Last year a police helicopter fell out of the sky and landed in a pub in Scotland. Life is a dream and we are the imagination of ourselves. |

Yes, such accidents happen and got posted on GLP. Really think this news item is worth at least some attention. With so many camera on the airshow there are bound to be more footage surfacing of this disaster. I find it strange that only one large Russian media site - Vesti.ru is carrying this so far. Airport closed until the end of the investigation. They have temporarily closed down Gelendzhik Airport while the investigation continues. It is a popular tourist destination and many tens of thousands of people attending the Airshow. From the news site "South Gelendzhik" [link to yug-gelendzhik.ru] Update 1. I have learnt from my Friend that the helicopter was from a private company. It struck its tail on the ground upon landing. He complained about the quality of helicopter pilot training in Russia. At least our military know how to land even without engines running, on autorotation. He filmed the aftermath and might make a clip out of it. I think it should be called "The decay of Russian General Aviation." Airport closed until the end of the investigation. Good afternoon everyone. My Gelendzhik Friend who was visiting the Hydroplanes Airshow just got in touch with me. He asked me to disseminate information about a Mi-8 helicopter, carrying the Russian flag having crashed near the Gelendzhik airport. More information will be incoming as I receive it. Quoting: Snuffielover Update 1. This is based off the eyewitnesses seeing a large column of smoke coming from the airport after the helicopter disappeared that way. Are you sure it was a real flag? It might have been one of those false flags I've been hearing so much about. But the Russian flag going down, with a column of smoke afterwards? That's kinda symbolic of something, I'm sure.
