Jesus may not have had a beard — if a discovery by Spanish archaeologists turns out to be true.

They have unearthed a glass plate dating back to the 4th century, which shows a clean-shaven Jesus Christ, flanked by two apostles, thought to be Peter and Paul, reports ABC.es.

It is one of the earliest known images of Jesus ever discovered.

The plate also shows him with much shorter hair as well as beardless.

It was discovered smashed into many pieces and has now been almost fully pieced back together.

The plate was unearthed in the southern Spanish town of Linares. It is thought it was used to hold bread during religious ceremonies.
