no, a dude with some money who was getting popped every time he went through Waldo, so he bought the billboards. But that was the previous sheriff

I'm not sure when it was set up but the speed trap was in force in 1980.

I used to live in gainesville and remember the waldo speed trap. hahaha too funny.

I'm not so sure this is a good thing because for some reason, I can envision the military stepping in and taking over.

I believe they've already done that up in Orlando or maybe Tampa? I know I read it recently.... just not sure where it was.

Wow, I just drove through there not too long ago.

Yes, it's ridiculous. There are many, many places where the speed limit changes.

It's 55, to 45, to 35, then back up to 55. This speed limit change happens along a long stretch of road about 50 miles long dozens of times.

Also, I recall I have NEVER, EVER anywhere seen so many cop cars. It was absolutely unreal. Cops EVERYWHERE.

Any poor tourist not familiar with the town has a high chance of getting pulled over if not paying attention to the chronic speed limit changes.

I'm glad this corrupt organization practice has finally been brought to light.

The Florida Department of Transportation is in charge of setting speed limits, but says it did factor in requests from Waldo officials when setting up speed limits there.

Towns around "old sparky" are mostly made up of DOC workers and staff.

Places like DC need to evaluate this too. They are cesspools that suck the revenue off of parking, travel, red light, and other areas. Does nothing except to feed the system.

Can anyone find a link for this story that isn't behind a paywall? All that I could find were stories about the militerization of the Police Force, which is a very different thing than the military actually taking over policing.

I do. I try to take yearly road trips. I loved Gainesville.

It's a teeny tiny town next to the Gainesville Regional Airport.

Hmmm........... disbanding a 3 man police department is hardly a big deal, is it? That town knew what was happening for years and they did nothing. I am not so easily impressed.
