Nauseating Hydrogen Sulfide Spillage Reported All Over Moscow, Russia! Video Inside! | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 40400905 United States 11/10/2014 12:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hydrogen sulfide levels have been exceeded by six to ten times. Reporters telling of people not buying up every protection device possible in the pharmacies. Which I find strange personally. I have a mask, or ten nearby and our neighbor has a lot of filtering gas masks from the Soviet times I hope are still functional. Quoting: Snuffielover The radio hosts are saying that little have changed since the Ukrainian SSR First Of May demonstration in Pripyat. The same dumb silence from officials, responsible for such things. Radio hosts mention the fear of responsibility that officials have now. We started digging under our city a long time ago - about two hundred years. So with, or without a volcano ever since the 70'ies people have joked about Moscow falling into a giant sink hole. EMERCOM notifies of a Hydrogen Sulfide scrubber failure at the Moscow Oil Refinery. Those allegations are denied by Gazprom, who is the owner of that plant. I am sure the health of hundreds of thousands is less important to them, then their profits of selling oil, gas, and diesel in most of Moscow's car-refilling stops. If any foreign minister begins to defend to the death a "peace conference," you can be sure his government has already placed its orders for new battleships and aeroplanes. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 57842295 United States 11/10/2014 12:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thank you! I do hope some heads will roll for exposing our capital for such a thing. Won't get my hopes up too high though. This system is highly corrupt. Usually they find a lower-ranking scapegoat to blame everything on. Another issue is all this secrecy as well as misinformation given. Any good advice besides wet rags to help neutralize Hydrogen Sulfide with the harmful effects it has on our bodies would be greatly appreciated! We do live in a dip, so I would guess there will be a higher concentration of this poison here. Just look at that video though, it was shot from a high-rise apartment building and you can see this deadly fog go up what, ten floors?! It may be written off as a viral cold as they usually do here, but I am telling you this release will surely have a very adverse effect on the health of our general populace. The only thing that could warm my heart in such a situation is that Mid to High-Level functionaries will be sure to note this gas as well. I doubt they sought shelter in bunkers today. Mister Putin is abroad in China right now, but I do hope his Environment Minister got a good dose of H2S! Maybe it will help him reconsider having Misc. factories as well as refineries within Moscow's borders! I don't want my city to turn into another Beijing! By the way even in Beijing for the international summit they shut down all the factories and car traffic to get a semblance of clear, blue skies! Another prospect I worry about is the sour, acid rains that will surely follow. Stripping our forests for plant life as well as poisoning our water / fishing reservoirs. We have wonderful ducks in a small lake nearby, I'd hate to see them go. I am usually not this "green", but it's hard to stay neutral when you know all of this will have a hugely compounded negative effect down the line. Sulfuric Acid ruins your water, plants, hair, as well as any clothes people have hanging outside. My tomatoes are in, figuratively. They were harvested in early September. A couple of 200mg Ibuprofen pills for my headache, and I should be good to go to keep on top of this. Check your inbox. |

If it is not a spill, I bet there with be a large earthquake there soon. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3046279 Official Emergency Services responsible for such things are now telling of a spill due to a scrubber malfunction. Filtering out all the information and keeping only the current one is quite the task. Hydrogen sulfide levels have been exceeded by six to ten times. Like most governments, they will announce something after everyone affected by it already knows. Oh I can get by, thank you Aspamce! I am more worried about my elderly relative and a post-operative care asthmatic child I am aware of in Moscow. They as well as the poor, elderly and homeless people in Moscow road underpasses (they seek shelter there most of the times) could use our warmest of thoughts. Moscow implemented air conditioned public rooms where elderly people (who could get to the few centers) as well as children and the sick ones could seek shelter when the summer is hot and the peat bogs are burning. I don't think they function outside summertime, or that their Air Conditioning units will be very effective in filtering out the poison gases blanketing our Capital. Still nobody wants to be responsible and people are still reporting of sulfur smell, falling ill. If any foreign minister begins to defend to the death a "peace conference," you can be sure his government has already placed its orders for new battleships and aeroplanes. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 36514702 United States 11/10/2014 12:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Is this confirmed as an industrial spill, or are there volcanoes nearby that you should be concerned about? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 59245951 There are no volcanoes, which I am aware about around Moscow. The video above illustrates how smoggy that "release" was. To cover such a large area, I'd say the release was substantial. The main suspects are the Moscow Oil Refinery as well as the sewage aeration plant. About four thousand six hundred square kilometers(1892sq. miles) of urban + suburban land was covered judging by the huge response from the people reporting it from Zelenograd to Podolsk. According to this article [link to www.m24.ru] our EMERCOM services blame the Moscow Refinery, while the Refinery reports of "No noticeable Malfunctions". Please keep in mind our Government has lousy communication. I bet this surfaced after many people reported of an emergency gas dump at the plant. Which is rather hard to overlook if you ask me. Events such as this are usually hushed, if they haven't taken lives directly. I have no doubt the mortality rate will spike greatly after this spillage. As it did when we had the peatbog fires covering the area with smoke in 2010. Luckily the smell has subsided here, but I am getting a very annoying headache. What annoys me the most is the darn expert reply. Most of them gave contradicting advice. Such as open all windows and walk outside (into the cloud of deadly gas). That was the information for those first three hours, until I called the Moscow radio station and told them that windows should be barred up and cars should recycle their air in traffic jams. After that tons of people started to do that by the following people who called in from jams, reporting how the smell got into their cars even with ventilation shut off / recycling. The (my) word "recycling" was heard like a thousand times in the hours after I called. In the event of a large, deliberate gas attack Moscow is DooMed! And it will spread all over the region, with millions of casualties. At least by the current weak response I noticed today. |

Even with the large cloud moving by the wind, it did cover all of Moscow at once! Look at the map please, measure the area of Moscow City. It is absolutely huge! Population 20 Million! Of them around five to seven are illegals, 'grey' persons not listed anywhere. They might as well perish, without anyone noticing sadly :( That is not including all the wonderful and marvelously diverse flora+fauna populating our city. Of the ones worthy of our sympathies are moose (meese?) in Moscow's largest forest as well as beautiful swans and geese in the thousands of small ponds and lakes in the city. Please keep in mind that was just smoke from peat bog fires. Not pleasant at all, as it led to around one hundred more deaths due to particle exposure and lung+heart diseases. This smog is not smoke, as it's Hydrogen Sulfide, Styrene as well as Formaldehyde! Thank you to everyone who cares about our well-being! Those warm thoughts are really appreciated! As I don't have the Freedom to leave this place I would be of much more use to keep updating, even with my headache and slight nausea. The exposure values aren't that high here I hope. Hopefully it will pass overnight. Anonymous Coward User ID: 40400905 United States 11/10/2014 12:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The only thing officials advised us to do was go to the beaches for the day and swim in the water. If not they advised people to put wet cold compresses on their faces and put on masques to protect breathing as best they could. That's all they could really do, air-conditioning was very rare when I lived there, and large ceiling circulating fans would just move the clouds around in the rooms if the doors and windows were open. I don't know for sure what's going on in Russia, but if this is a natural event or not protecting your skin and breathing is a must. |

It doesn’t matter that it is not active for thousands of years already, still there are so called ‘fluid streams’ gases from the center of the Earth comes to surface through ancient volcanoes, they cause the tremors of the surface and ruining the roads and buildings in Moscow.”. He also admitted that around 15% of Moscow city surface can get under the ground. And there is still a chance that the volcano can wake up. “It’s not to clear what causes some old and forgotten volcanoes that were not active for years to wake up suddenly”. In this case all the city would be buried. [link to englishrussia.com] |

I work in the oilsands in Canada and work at these kinds of plants. As I sit here I am surrounded by half a dozen of the biggest plants in the world. Anonymous Coward User ID: 15969668 United States 11/10/2014 12:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Get some ozone generators. Ozone reacts away H2S, turns it into SO2 (also not good) and H2O. Then the SO2 reacts with ozone and forms SO3, which will be a white fibrous flaky solid. Don't eat that. The only gas masks that work are those connected to a known-good air supply, like an air tank. In other words, a full-body hazmat suit. The mask the guy is wearing in the picture - that's useless against H2S. The H2S will accumulate in basements and other low-lying areas now and concentrate. There may be some more fires, or explosions. It will adsorb onto materials and you can be poisoned by skin contact. Don't touch anything you don't have to, especially outdoors. Best bet, stay indoors, seal up good, sit by an ozone generator. |
