News are coming in from all of Moscow of a nauseating Hydrogen Sulfide smell. Possible spillage from the Moscow Oil Processing Plant in Kapotnya District. Experts are looking for the cause of this pillage and smell.

Wonderful and useless advice to "Open Windows Wide to air out your room." heard on the radio right now. I'd say tape the windows and airways shut and turn on the car air-re-circulation for those caught in the evening traffic jams.

Another update coming in just now is that the gas spillage comes from the Ljublino District. Information keeps getting updated rapidly. The winds are Southerly today, and this huge pollution cloud will probably spread itself over my town pretty soon.

Here is the only news item I could find of this. [link to www.m24.ru] The Experts are still uncertain where exactly this spillage came from. I remind you that Hydrogen Sulfide is a Class 4 Health Hazard with even short exposures being deadly.

Update. The concentrations of Styrene and Formaldehyde have been double, or five times the safe values from early night tonight in several of Moscow's regions. Not very healthy either. What are your thoughts abut this whole situation?

The EMERCOM of Russia is currently telling Moscow's populace that "it is not dangerous. Please be calm." When such an event has not been heard of here in Moscow for at least ten years. Darn Government Officials.

hiding This horrible smell has now wafted over our town as I predicted. This unmistakable smell of rotten eggs is spreading wider still. Might be this high pressure ridge enchanting the Iceland's Volcano SO2 releases perhaps? Still a mystery to where the source comes from!

Thanks to Dangerwalt for finding this video of the event. Notice how 10-14 story apartment buildings were all covered in this dense and dangerous fog.

Hello! As you know I have been working with Luis on the Iceland Volcano thread for the past two months and wanted to share this info with you as it might help. The owners of the Refinery in Moscow have denied any leak, so I looked at the NASA So2 website and found out that there is a large amount of So2 directly over the Moscow area. I monitor this site daily as the Iceland rift fissure is emitting an average of 35 thousand tons of So2 per day into the troposphere. Here is the link and if you change the date at the bottom of the page to 11-10-2014, you will see the large red marking directly over Moscow.

Here is the NASA link:

Get some ozone generators. Ozone reacts away H2S, turns it into SO2 (also not good) and H2O. Then the SO2 reacts with ozone and forms SO3, which will be a white fibrous flaky solid. Don't eat that.

The only gas masks that work are those connected to a known-good air supply, like an air tank. In other words, a full-body hazmat suit. The mask the guy is wearing in the picture - that's useless against H2S.

The H2S will accumulate in basements and other low-lying areas now and concentrate. There may be some more fires, or explosions. It will adsorb onto materials and you can be poisoned by skin contact. Don't touch anything you don't have to, especially outdoors. Best bet, stay indoors, seal up good, sit by an ozone generator.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15969668

NO. People have to leave or die.
It's that simple.

No stupid ozone generator or self confinement will save you.
People need to know what to do or die.

There is only ONE option for people... EVACUATE

Ask any oil worker what to do when sour gas or h2s is present...

GET OUT!

There is no gadget or mask or wet rag or high enough floor in a building will save you.

You need to leave.

This is an unprecedented world changing event here. You may have only hours to live.

You don't want to get trapped when people start dying and the roads get blocked.

i dont buy the scrubber malfunction

we must be talking millions of cubic metres of atmosphere affected there. almost to saturation point with that mist

that's one hell of a 'malfunction'
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 64984676

I am not quite sure I am buying it either. Even with the large cloud moving by the wind, it did cover all of Moscow at once! Look at the map please, measure the area of Moscow City. It is absolutely huge! Population 20 Million! Of them around five to seven are illegals, 'grey' persons not listed anywhere.

They might as well perish, without anyone noticing sadly :( That is not including all the wonderful and marvelously diverse flora+fauna populating our city. Of the ones worthy of our sympathies are moose (meese?) in Moscow's largest forest as well as beautiful swans and geese in the thousands of small ponds and lakes in the city.

One video from August 7, 2010. Moscow in smog from fires around the city.

 Quoting: Dangerwalt

Please keep in mind that was just smoke from peat bog fires. Not pleasant at all, as it led to around one hundred more deaths due to particle exposure and lung+heart diseases. This smog is not smoke, as it's Hydrogen Sulfide, Styrene as well as Formaldehyde!

Thank you to everyone who cares about our well-being! Those warm thoughts are really appreciated! As I don't have the Freedom to leave this place I would be of much more use to keep updating, even with my headache and slight nausea. The exposure values aren't that high here I hope. Hopefully it will pass overnight.
 Quoting: Snuffielover

OP please stay safe, that is the most important thing. :) Don't put your self or loved ones in danger, but please keep us updated as you can. My thoughts and prayers go out to the good people of Russia

Doh! This sulfur must be getting to my brain! Why didn't I think of looking up the satellite date for Sulfur in our atmosphere ASAP! Thank you very much for catching this relevant information! I will dig into it and see if it might give us some answers.

Satellites are sure showing a large blob of SO2 yes. They can't show where it originated from though. If this was Miss Barda, all of West Russia, including St. Petersburg would be reporting this "spillage". So far it has gone past Zelenograd heading North - NNW. Other places are not reporting this smell.

Hello Snuffie.

I'm really no expert but I think it first could have gone very high into the atmosphere (hot gas in cold air) and - because it's heavy - coming down after it has cooled. Would be interesting to see this gas clouds in 3D or at which heights are which concentrations.

I hope for you that it's gone soon.
The main reason for my wish to change this society is that so many human skills have no chance to come to fruition. Instead they are used in a really sick way that people are maintaining their own suffering from wars, hunger and illness. But it cannot be changed “top-down”, only in some kind of “grassroots revolution” or better “evolution” where more and more people work together to get rid of TPTB (whoever that is).
No need for a “big event” but a development. One of my ideas to reach it:
Don’t play “their” games - don’t use “their” rules - don’t think in the box of “their” paradigms.
It’s more “refuse” than “resist” - without too much ideology. You don't need to know much about "what's going on behind the curtains", it's mainly to create your own rules together with likeminded people.
That is what I mean with “I’m on the side of the people”.

The 5th Dimension principal of harmony reveals that supporting others creates strength. The lower dimension mind believes that acquiring or taking from others makes you stronger. Yet, as you can imagine, if all people desire to "take" from others, the fabric of the reality tears itself apart.
If you want to start prospering and growing stronger, start focusing on supporting others.

If you want to start prospering and growing stronger, focus on supporting others where you can. Give to others that cross YOUR PATH and you soon discover you will be given more. The 5th Dimension principal of harmony means that you will always have an abundance to do a good work.

Russian emergency services on Monday warned Muscovites to stay indoors and seal off access to fresh air amid reports of toxic chemical fumes permeating the city.

Air in southwestern Moscow contained 2.5 times the maximum permissible levels of styrene, a toxic and mutagenic chemical used for polymer production, according to city-run environmental monitoring watchdog Mosekomonitoring.

A strong smell of hydrogen sulfide was also reported citywide, including at The Moscow Times headquarters at Marina Roshcha. The substance has an aroma reminiscent of rotting eggs.

"Head hurts, feel sick, eyes watering," Natalia Kim, a resident of the styrene-hit Kozhukhovo district, wrote on Facebook.

He's better off inside now. The gas is mainly outdoors. It'll concentrate in ditches, ravines, ponds, lakes, etc. So you go walking or driving near any of those things - like on the way out of town - and an invisible concentrated cloud could blow onto you and kill you insta-dead. Why risk THAT?

Yeah, a minor power outage here. Probably the nearby construction site bothering the 6KV cables again. Took the off time to go and check up on my kitties. They seem very sleepy, as does my sick relative.

Is drowsiness part of stress, or Sulfur poisoning I wonder? Perhaps I am imagining things, I would think they would sound the alarms if it was really serious by now.

Meanwhile our news "City FM" reported that "RosHydroMet", our MetOffice had stated that this sulfur smell will linger above Moscow until the end of Tuesday. News are coming in that our consumer protection ministry / agency has started a civil case from the fact of this "spillage". Poor Muscovites, we could really use your warm thoughts now.

The sulfides concentration is ten times above nominal "safe" values now. First it was nothing, then they said "minor values above normal", then "twice the normal amounts" and now the Sulfur values are ten times larger! Along with the carcino-/muta-genic Styrene and Formaldehyde. Something must have gone really FUBAR for those to be detected I think.

This "City FM" had a journalist smelling the air outside the Refinery. When they really should save the scrubber logs now, to prevent tampering. Keep in mind that the gas plume from the Refinery pipes will fall down away from the spillage site itself.

Re: Nauseating Hydrogen Sulfide Spillage Reported All Over Moscow, Russia! Video Inside!

Keep in mind that the gas plume from the Refinery pipes will fall down away from the spillage site itself.

they've thrown styrene and formaldehyde in to throw you off the scent, as it were

those two are probably ALWAYS there, always poisoning you
