Seattle City Council wants to fund internet in homeless camps

I need to move out of this city. First it was the extended background check now this dumbass initiative.

if you're going to spy on the people everyone should be included.

If the Seattle city council wants internet for the homeless let them pay for it out of their own pockets! Don't make tax payers fund stupid shit today and cry you don't have money for roads next week! Fucking Liberal democrats tax and spend money on dumb shit!

The homeless won't be able to find a job without the internet. They don't post the jobs in the newspaper like they used to.

Can't they go hang out in a Starbucks for free wifi, like the rest of us?

I like this. Like already said, it may help them get jobs.

As far as I know a lot of the people in Seattle's tent cities have jobs, they just can't afford a place to live on the wages they're making.

If there are going to be tent cities, they need to be dealt with in some kind of comprehensive way, that doesn't include bulldozing them.

Providing basic sanitary and communication services isn't that farfetched.

The internet is NOT a luxury. Like many posters said above, if you aren't online you will never get a job these days, and if you do get a job you better be able to receive emails and respond to them in a timely fashion, as well as have reliable texting and phone service. Trust me you need this for a janitor job, it is not optional.

If a person has internet access, that can be telephone service too, and access to financial services like paying bills.

Not having internet service and cell phone service is really the last bottom rung of the ladder, you don't exist socially and are truly unemployable at that point and you won't be able to get a place to live either. Seriously.

And of course the poster above who said the real reason is to keep them out of the libraries and coffee shops has probably nailed it.

maybe this is one of obolas sneaky ways to turn inet into a utility like electricity. it's the way they're wording it that makes me think that.

in the real world people don't generally hire homeless people simply because they are homeless.
also once people get homeless they generally don't have a car, or the clothes needed for a job.
to think the inet is going to get the homeless jobs in an already messed up job market is pretty fanciful.

come on folks, how expensive could it be ... there are entire nations that offer internet connections to their people for FREE - and they are considered 3rd world countries .

it keeps them off the streets - could possible lead to jobs and prevent depression ... and offers education ... a cheap preventative of some very expensive alternatives

It is the plan that is so expensive.

My son has canceled his mobile phone service to save the monthly fee. He still uses the phone WiFi enabled connection to make phone calls and browse the internet. We talked for over an hour last night with Skype. He also uses his laptop.

There is free WiFi just about everywhere here anymore. He is thinking about getting a simple $15 a month phone just for emergency and necessary calls. Still he is saving over $75 a month.

He lives near Seattle and was telling how much it costs for a studio apartment. I think he said $1200 to $1400 a month in Bellevue without any utilities included. Ouch.

They could save money by just paying for the porn portion of the web.

why not? they could get jobs or assistance to get on their feet

the gov't spends so much on welfare bums in government housing why not give the actual homeless something small like the net?? I don't see the big deal

OK Einstein do You actually know any homeless people? I have a friend or had a friend that has been homeless for over 10+ years. All I can say is most homeless people are fucked in the head and no amount of money will fix the damage inside.

Look around you. Look at the inner cities. 90% of the population is living in a 3rd world country.

Seattle is a GREAT city! I visited there about 10 years ago. Awesome people...even if it's a "blue" state.
