Our economy hinges on maintaining the petrodollar system. A devalued dollar means hyperinflation. The good news is we will be competitive with third world counties and we will bring back manufacturing jobs from China. The bad news is we will be living like the Chinese 30 years ago where the price of manufactured goods are out of reach for most.

Hi. Here is the real scoop. Dollar is doomed. Central banks are now trading sdr's (standard drawing rights), instead of dollars. The world bank group, and the IMF are finalizing a "basket" of currencies including the dollar that will be used much like sdr's are used internationally. Much like the Euro, this currency would lower transaction costs between countries. The basket would include: the dollar the yen the mark the pound and the remembe and the Swiss franc. This would benefit tremendously thise additional currencies while hurting the dollar while maintain status quo for ourselves western and Asia trading nations.

The downside is the USA would suffer "declining terms of trade." If you travel overseas much especially in third world countries you will notice that dollar for dollar you are still paying MORE money eating out than in the USA. Look at the Big Mac index to get an idea for this concept - the idea is buying power. We will lose buying power and as Obola mentioned early on we will have to adjust our lifestyles tremendously.

For starters, the VC were totally destroyed in the Tet offense--never to be more than a terror tool for the north after. In fact, Tet resulted in the biggest land victory for the US since WW2. The north was so shook up that it could barely do anything until '72. Somehow or another it was presented to America as a defeat. Check out the facts. The US military was not defeated there--the Dems surrendered by cutting supplies to the south after we had withdrawn all but a few small units. The south was stabbed in the back.

The massive preparation that our government has undertaken has convinced me that, by their actions, they believe this coming collapse will make all previous collapses look like a kindergarten picnic. The have militarized law enforcement and stockpiled enough supplies and ammunition to fight a decade long war. They have seized control of the media, green lighted legislation to strip the rights of anybody they deem a threat. This controlled takeover is reminiscent of the Nazi parties 1930's takeover of Germany.

In essence then doesn't it mean that the bondholders of this debt get to take over the assets of the borrower by default? In clearer terms - America ceases to exist as a sovereign nation and gets taken over by - in this case - China? We the citizens will be dealing with a regime change - new government, laws, etc. And goodbye to the Constitution. Is that why Obama is being so brazen with his executive orders. In the end it won't matter who is or isn't a US citizen sice it no longer will exist as a nation? Just asking.

It will require NO EFFORT of some sinister group.to collapse the system. It will happen without anyone’s help. The US debt structure never paying anything off is the same fatal flaw. The economy will collapse regardless of the desire of any group. Yes these structural flaws could be fixed right now. But that requires government changing and letting go of some power. The value of the US dollar is determined in large part by the fact that oil is sold in US dollars. If that trade shifts to a different currency, countries around the world won't need all their US money. The resulting sell-off of US dollars would weaken the currency dramatically.

So here's an interesting thought experiment. Everybody says the US goes to war to protect its oil supplies, but doesn't it really go to war to ensure the continuation of the petrodollar system?

The Iraq war provides a good example. Until November 2000, no OPEC country had dared to violate the US dollar-pricing rule, and while the US dollar remained the strongest currency in the world there was also little reason to challenge the system. But in late 2000, France and a few other EU members convinced Saddam Hussein to defy the petrodollar process and sell Iraq's oil for food in euros, not dollars. In the time between then and the March 2003 American invasion of Iraq, several other nations hinted at their interest in non-US dollar oil trading, including Russia, Iran, Indonesia, and even Venezuela. In April 2002, Iranian OPEC representative Javad Yarjani was invited to Spain by the EU to deliver a detailed analysis of how OPEC might at some point sell its oil to the EU for euros, not dollars.

This movement, founded in Iraq, was starting to threaten the dominance of the US dollar as the global reserve currency and petro currency. In March 2003, the US invaded Iraq, ending the oil-for-food program and its euro payment program.

There are many other historic examples of the US stepping in to halt a movement away from the petrodollar system, often in covert ways. In February 2011 Dominique Strauss-Kahn, managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), called for a new world currency to challenge the dominance of the US dollar. Three months later a maid at the Sofitel New York Hotel alleged that Strauss-Kahn sexually assaulted her. Strauss-Kahn was forced out of his role at the IMF within weeks; he has since been cleared of any wrongdoing.

War and insidious interventions of this sort may be costly, but the costs of not protecting the petrodollar system would be far higher. If euros, yen, renminbi, rubles, or for that matter straight gold, were generally accepted for oil, the US dollar would quickly become irrelevant, rendering the currency almost worthless. As the rest of the world realizes that there are other options besides the US dollar for global transactions, the US is facing a very significant – and very messy – transition in the global oil machine.
