Would you like to learn data mining/statistical learning? Free course materials and ebook
Stanford will be offering a free ecourse in statistical learning. The course will include materials and a free pdf version of a popular introductory textbook: An Introduction to Statistical Learning, with Applications in R.

The textbook is a the little sister of The elements of statistical learning: data mining, inference, and prediction.

The text is very well written and accessible to many people, and unlike its big sister, does not require a graduate level understanding of mathematical statistics, analysis, and linear algebra.

The course, and textbook, use the R programming language (the book walks you through programming in R) which is completely free and easy to download.

Here is the website for the course: [link to class.stanford.edu (secure)]

Re: Would you like to learn data mining/statistical learning? Free course materials and ebook
Back in college in 1994, all we used for statistics was Excel and MiniTab.

I personally prefered Excel with its windows interface since I had already learned to use it rather than the clumsy DOS user interface that MiniTab had at the time.

Nowadays, I use both Microsoft Excel and Access to perform the same kind of tasks that would have required the R-Programming language Stanford uses.
