I have had my last communication with a very special human being. It is sad, but it is life. We never know when we have the opportunity or responsibility of such a fleeting and significant moment. I am very much humbled by the experience. I have witnessed death before, several times. Yet, this is the first time I received a written final statement. Other deaths I witnessed in person were a confusing, often chaotic, few minutes of life slipping away into a silent heart rending transition from life into the unknown. Antonio's death I did not witness, he was thousands of miles away but I felt it deeply none the less.

My friend did not want people to know of his condition while he was here and did not want sympathy, though he suffered much. He maintained his humanity, humility and sense of humor to the end. He was an exceptional spirit. He did not seem to fear death, he had faith in God's wisdom and grace. I think he loved life but knew it was time for him to leave. When my time comes I hope to have his courage, strength and dignity.

We met here on GLP probably over three years ago. I was drawn to his patience, humor and caring personality. He loved music, movies, literature, good food, drink and a good smoke, probably a pipe and/or cigars. He was only 49. Was a Spanish gentleman with amazing language and cultural understanding.

We were of a kindred spirit. I will miss him deeply! Let it be known !! We have all lost a friendly and caring human of enormous worth and mirth.

God's Speed Antonio!!!!!!!

What does a dying man say to his friends? I invite you to share your memories and thoughts about Antonio. Many of you I know were his friends. Please feel free to Post your feelings.

Antonio's memorial announcement translated by a friend:
.

Mister D. Antonio Fontela Talin
Past away in Oviedo,
the day of December 19, 2014,
at the age of 49 years old.
Having received the SS. SS.* and the Apostolic Blessing
R.I.P.

His brother, Jose Modesto Fontela Talin,
asks for prayers for his soul.**
At 6 in the afternoon on Saturday, 20, his ashes will be received in the San Jose, Gijon church’s chapel, where his funeral will be celebrated for his eternal rest.
Fervent Chapel: Tanatorio Los Arenales, lounge Number 9, Oviedo.
Telephone 98223187
Installed*** until eleven thirty, of Saturday morning, of the 20th.

Notes:
*SS. SS. : I think it means Santos Sacramentos. Which translated means Holy Sacraments.
** The literal translation is “begs for a prayer for his soul”. That is a catholic expression.
*** Instalada is not commonly used in this context. The best translation for this sentence would be “The showing will be until eleven thirty…”

This Thread is basically for the living, those of us who grieve for the loss of Antonio. He was unique and one of us, maybe he represents the better part of "us"! So maybe it is time to look in the mirror and ask . . . who are we?

I think Antonio would say we are a unique collection of the world. We represent many different nations, languages and cultures . . . the common bond is our use of this technology (the Internet and computers, smart phones, etc) , the website GLP and for the most part the use of English as the communal vehicle to correspond. Beyond this we are curious and interested in others, their thoughts, beliefs and a desire to observe, question, be entertained, and often debate.

I think Antonio would say we are drawn here like a moth is attracted to a flame. Antonio turned to GLP, I believe, because he had a deep curiosity for so many things. Where else can one engage in conversations about almost anything, any time of the day or night, with almost anyone in the entire world, and carry on several conversations almost simultaneously!

For a personality like Antonio it was like heaven on earth! And as his health became more difficult, and necessarily more restrictive and isolating, I believe his bond with GLP grew even more important. He was empathetic, intuitive, caring and understanding and he helped many here with their individual struggles just by being himself!

I will take from Antonio, we never know who we are communing and communicating with here on GLP. They may be famous or unknown, worldly or naive, old or young, angel or demon, male or female, powerful or weak, sane or insane, sick or healthy, poor or rich but "here" (GLP) we are all equal and that is a most rare opportunity! Let's not squander the opportunity. We may be lucky enough to encounter another Antonio!. hmmm

OH NO!!!
I noticed I had not seen as many of his intriguing posts recently. I was in an antique store the day before yesterday and I thought of him when I saw some "creepy clown" nick nacs. This really saddens me, we had a brief conversation pm about the Basque, witchcraft and an author he was familiar with.

I am sad. I really enjoyed the way he wrote and his unique threads. Thank you George for letting us know.

Yes, a rare form of sarcoma that usually attacks children and young adults. He had one leg amputated below the knee about a year ago in an attempt to slow or stop the sarcoma.

Life is so fragile and precious. I know he is adventuring in some other place now - but we are left with just a little less color in our world.
