They've just changed their facebook logo and home picture to grey. People are commenting as to why.

Unless this ENTIRE thing is a facebook hack, including the news?

I wouldn't be surprised if weather had something to do with this. Some very active storms where contact was lost, just off the south coast of Kalimantan. Latest satellite image:

Look at the FlightRadar24 track before contact was lost. There were some significant airspeed and altitude fluctuations right at the end. This indicates some very bad weather and wind sheer turbulence:

Very likely but the pilots would have expressed this before asking for "an unusual route." Maybe they did and that is not being reported.

cant be weather because headline would have been , 'plane loses contact in storm.'

headline or first sentence would have mentioned the plane losing communications as it went into a storm.

AirAsia has announced a press conference shortly, says there were 155 on board. It was travelling through an area of bad weather at the time.

Reuters reporting the plane had asked for an unusual route before contact was lost.

Contact was lost 3 1/2 hours ago (at 0617 local/2317GMT/1817 EST)

Emergency Call Centre established for family or friends of those on board aircraft. number is +622129850801.

AirAsia releases statement - nothing much of substance other than confirming they lost contact with the plane. "We have not further information of the status". Link to statement

An Airbus 320 should not be bothered by a thunderstorm.

They're flying at 35,000+ feet, and they're huge airplanes and very stable.

I have a feeling this is not weather-related.

Weather most certainly could have been the request for an "unusual route". That is the captain's decision and he does not have to record the reason for his flight plan request.
