Toyota Did Something Amazing at This Years CES! The Age of Hydrogen Has Begun!
The biggest thing that happened at this years Consumer Electronics Show 2015 in Vegas wasn't all the high end sports cars nor the "who can break the bank with the most outrageous price tag" honors, but it was Toyota GIVING AWAY all 5680 hydrogen fuel cell patents royalty free!

Now back yard mechanics will literally save years worth of research and development and bring us that much closer to a world no longer dependent on fossil fuels.

Good on YOU Toyota!

I would like to see a world less dependent on oil but it is not going to happen through hydrogen. I'm sorry.

I won't even begin to list all the problems with hydrogen -- from storage to delivery to "raw to road" thermal efficiency. It does not make sense. BMW attempted it in the 1990's here in Germany and it made waves. Great idea, sounds green (all though it is not) and was said to be the future. It failed mostly because of economics and again, delivery and total efficiency. And that is why it is not a good idea right now.

In the next decade we will see more electric but diesel is the real winner. Audi has a small 1.5 litre turbo+kompressor diesel that can put out 200kw (300 horsepower I think) while getting the goal 1 litre per 100 km!

Hydrogen future? In 40 years we will be flying hydrogen powered airplanes.

Former Space Shuttle engineer here.

We spent months trying to solve the problem of hydrogen leaks on the 17 Inch Disconnect.

The H2 molecule is so small (the smallest) that it will go right through the side of an aluminum tank.

It will combust spontaneously with air in low concentrations and the flame is invisible, i.e., you can walk right into it without noticing anything until your clothing catches fire.

Then there is the problem of hydrogen embrittlement of pipelines and anything made of steel.

I am a technological optimist, but hydrogen has a load of problems to solve before it can be safely handled and used in autos.

BTW, back in 1989 I saw a fuel cell at Idaho National Engineering Laboratory that ran on almost any hydrocarbon including coal. Wonder what happened to that technology?

Yes, cold fusion is real. This is why both Toyota and Tesla are 'giving away' their IPR. All their work will be deemed worthless over the coming year or so as it goes main stream that LENR works.

Right now, today, if you have IPR on other alternative energy sources, you have to war game out what to do. Today it has peak value. If you 'donate it' you can get massive tax right downs based on the intrinsic value AND you get lost of community good will.

The day after everyone, from financial to mainstream mom and pop, realize that they can get a cold fusion powered car/house/etc. that nearly costs nothing to operate, is cheap to produce and buy and has not harmful environmental effects, then those patents will be worthless.

That's why a board of directors, responsible to shareholders, would approve this action by both car complines -- it makes business sense, but you have to do it right now.

Agreed, but that day isn't anything but wishful thinking at this moment in time. At least with this bold a move, Toyota basically thumbed their nose at big oil and removed that stigma attached to any one of us tinkerers being suicided as the next Stanley Meyers.

Yes, but it went "hush-hush" after Stan Meyers was killed. Just the thought that Toyota even OWNS close to 6000 patents means that they've been behind closed doors working on similar technologies ever since. I think they did good and this IMHO will only lead to bigger and better!

Imagine IF Moore's law were applicable to this technology? LOL

By 2050, we'd be traveling to the moon on a half cup of tap water!

Let me tell you about this and why hydrogen is wrong where HHO is GOOD.

They get the hydrogen by washing methane. There of course is no O in methane so, when you burn the hydrogen you REDUCE OXYGEN in the atmosphere.

Thats why it has to be HHO and only HHO. Electrolyse water simple ....!

Build a power station use the electric to electrolyse water release HHO and you can morally justify charging for it.

Or make your own as in the brilliant video above.

I agree, but as I understand it not all of their patents are for the fuel cells. Some are actually for the hydrogen generators (i.e.@ electrolysis).

Re: Toyota Did Something Amazing at This Years CES! The Age of Hydrogen Has Begun!
Hydrogen makes an interesting storage of energy but that's all it can be, with current technology -- a kind of "battery."

You'll hear "HHO" but you can't run a car 100% off it. It doesn't add any new energy into a system, else why can't you connect several dozen HHO devices to an engine and run 100% free? The energy output is (likely to be) the same as energy input.

Where hydrogen might shine is if some new miracle technology somehow is able to separate water molecules with less energy than is produced when combining them again, or by the economies of large-scale hydrogen production.

I've always wanted to find out more about this vehicle but I think it has the same problem as HHO generators. Supposedly, a musician from the heavy metal group "Rampage" built a water-powered car, which splits the hydrogen molecule with less energy than it takes to drive the vehicle.

That Tech, like many others "everyone has heard stories about cars that had more power and were driven months without a refill" until the car company brought them a "new" one that acted "normally". Maybe it's an urban legend but I doubt it. Anyways, that Tech, is locked away tightly so that no one can ever "benefit" from it. Oil companies rule the world "for the most part". Why would they let their cash cow loose. They Won't, just like Marlboro didn't stop making cigarettes even though we all know they cause cancer and all kinds of other shit, but POT is a schedule 3 Narc...right?? Alcohol and Tobacco should be schedule 3 drugs. They alone cause approximately 70 percent of all deaths in America alone. Then, there are cars, but we won't go there, people just need to learn how to drive.

Stan Myers system split the molecules inside the piston chamber with precision, the force from the separation of those molecules delivered compression separate from he hydrogen combustion.
Needless to say Stan was killed by NWO in late 90's. A Belgian hit team was having lunch "discussing patents and business" with Stan. He screamed out and said "they poisoned me" and died within minutes.

But to get back to this topic, it is nice to see Toyota try this technology. BMW nearly perfected it 20 years ago. It was not a viable business back then and still not today. Give it 20 years. Oil wells are running dry. They will need to do much more deep sea drilling to keep up with demand.
