That story sounds fishy to me LNG is usually stable when transported, gastanks are build to withstand hours of fire.

There are cases where fires where burning for hours and the firefighters cooled the tanks and it didnt explode at all.

I'm sure they will all be found alive and well somewhere in south Texas.

Contrary to what some believe in the US, if people could make a decent living in a safe city most Mexicans would not move to the US. And if Mexico is a shithole of corruption, the US governments over the decades and centuries are not blameless, in fact the western world and the IMF have a lot of blame.

In the past 25 years there have been 3 outright fraudulent elections in Mexico, where the winner did not assume power. Funny how the US can get their panties in knot over the Ukraine, but they actually supported and continue to support the corrupt unelected governments of Salinas, Calderon and Pena Nieto. I would think that an illegitimate president involved in money laundering and drug trafficking would be more pressing that bringing "democracy" to far away countries.

In fact, the turning point that brought us to where we are today was preventing the rightfully elected president Cuauhtemoc Cardenas from becoming president in 1988 and allowing the Salinas cartel to bring narco government to Mexico. The Salinas and Bush families have a lot of history, not hard to research on the net. The Salinas presidency is where it all went dark, and if the US and the western world had stood up and prevented him from taking power, things might have been different.

The very wealthy may have businesses and properties in the US, but they also have homes in Mexico. The middle class is just trying to stay afloat and it is a shrinking class, and the poor are desperate to find a way to survive. Unfortunately the criminals are the ones polluting the reputation of Mexicans.

I work with LPG inside and outside of Mexico. Unfortunately I have been on the liability side of similar occurrences. My opinion as to what happened is as follows:

The Mexican culture legitimizes cheating...from the street sweeper to the president and all levels in-between. Virtually nothing is done above board and there is a virtually-codified way of bribing authorities at any/all levels.

For this scenario the norm is to bribe a certified inspector to look a one or two of your trucks and then he will certify the other trucks so the supplier doesn't have to pull them from the routes. The problem was the broken hose, but the tank itself should have had an internal excess flow valve that would shut off the flow in an uncontrolled release. Obviously it was absent.

Second, the hose was probably old as Adam. The hoses are kept in a reel and each time the driver reels the hose in and out, there is a chance to snag something. Over time the hose is guaranteed to break, its just a matter of time.

The third ingredient needed is concentration of LPG with air (LPG won't combust until it reaches an 8:1 ratio with air. This normally cannot happen in the open air as LPG immediately vaporizes and rises. The exception is in an uncontrolled release a "cloud" forms and cannot dissipate quickly enough.

Finally, you just need an ignition source...anything will do from a cigarette to a running engine.

Obviously all these factors came together to produce this accident and I cannot imagine the pain both parties are going through (the vendor of the propane for instance). These are just people as well...especially the drivers who are paid extremely low wages.

There is virtually zero hazmat training...most workers and consumers don't even know what is inside the bottles and tanks...it is a complete mystery to them.

Well, that's my take.

As an anecdote, one time we were loading a 10,500 gallon trailer fro ma railcar and the attendant was disconnecting the hose so he hit the flange with his brass hammer to unscrew it...the pipe nipple on the truck side of the hose was so rusted (but painted over) that it just broke right off...and there was no internal excess flow valve to stop the leak. We released 10,000 gallons of propane instaneously into the atmosphere...but all procedures had been followed up t that point and afterwards...the only guy hurt was the attendent disconnecting the hose and he had rather severe burns on his hand (from the cold temperature of the vaporizing propane).

Anyway, such a tragedy...I had a small hose rupture like that and the propane got caught under a roof and concentrated. the owner of the house was told to not go in, but he insisted that he had to turn out the pilot light of his water heater...blew the whole house up the moment he opened the utility room door...he layed for three days with his swollen intestines laying beside him on the bed until he finally died.

poor kids. poor mamas and daddies. poor family of the drivers. all because Mexico can't get their shit together.

This is why when I see gas trucks,I try to get away from them.
Especially when at the gas station refilling the gas reservoir. I feel so sorry for the victims. It reminds me of the Oaklahoma truck bomb.

It just goes to show us that you never know when your last day on earth is.

It was LPG, liquified petroleum Gas, or propane as it is called in our country. LNG is liquified natural gas...which is not what this was, and it was not gasoline...common mistakes.

The truck was a bobtail...it looks like a rolling oblong tank with rounded ends...usually about 12,000 gallons capacity (the larger ones). Just like the ones that deliver propane to stationary tanks all over...very common.

As an aside, if anyone finds out the supplier, please post it.
