Russian bombers flying close to UK airspace could be an act of "aggression" to coincide with the public inquiry into the death of KGB spy Alexander Litvinenko, a defence expert has warned.

Fighter jets scrambled to intercept two Russian Bear long-range bombers that were flying over the Channel, south of Bournemouth, yesterday, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.

The "unusual" sighting coincided with day two of the public inquiry into the death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian spy who died in November 2006 from radioactive poisoning after drinking tea while meeting two Russian men at the Millennium Hotel in London's Grosvenor Square.

Yesterday's hearing heard explosive opening statements which included claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the former's spy's murder.

Elizabeth Quintana, a senior research fellow at defence think-tank the Royal United Services Institute said Wednesday's fighter jet incident was unusual and could be linked to the inquiry.

"Normally Russian Bears come past Norway and down the North Sea. It could have been used to probe the RAF speed of reaction south," she told the Daily Mail.

"Flying any military aircraft in or close to the sovereign airspace of another country signals displeasure or at worst aggression."
