Re: Iceland to build first temple to Norse gods since Viking age
All other "gods" will be destroyed once YAHUWAHs presence is known on earth and His Kingdom on Mount Zion, YAHUSHALOM, the sanctuary of eternal peace, is seen by all. The families of the earth will be ressurected and know what true eternal love and peace is when this is inevitably accomplished.

Re: Iceland to build first temple to Norse gods since Viking age
...

It could be that some have not read the article.

Headline is:

A modern version of Norse paganism has been gaining popularity in recent years as followers see the stories as metaphors for life not worship of the gods

This is a celebration of their culture, which I fully support.

From the article:

“I don’t believe anyone believes in a one-eyed man who is riding about on a horse with eight feet,” said Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, high priest of Ásatrúarfélagið, an association that promotes faith in the Norse gods.

“We see the stories as poetic metaphors and a manifestation of the forces of nature and human psychology.”

This is respecting the roots of their culture and what motivated them to be who they are then and now.

I am a Christian and am not offput nor offended by the building of this temple. They could not have been clearer on what their intentions are.

I just don't think people are actually reading the article and are just responding to the thread title.
 Quoting: Aspamce

Oh I read the article alright, and I stand by what I said.

If you were close to the Lord, you would see the error in all of this.

Celebrating ones roots, if the roots are bad, isn't a good thing......spiritually speaking.

And, it's not that "i'm" offended, or "you're" not offended, it's about what the ALMIGHTY CREATOR thinks and if HE is offended.........cause that's all that matters!
 Quoting: daughteroftheking

No, I do not accept your thinking that unless I agree that this is a spit in the face of Christ then I am not close to the Lord. I no more find this wrong than I do Native Americans who celebrate their heritage and adhere to "old ways" yet go to church every Sunday. The builders of the temple are very clear on their intent. They are very clear in terms of not worshipping pagan gods.

The only thing I agree with in your statement is that what matters is what God thinks. Whatever you think my relationship to the Lord is, whatever you think about how this offends you, does not matter in the least. Ultimately that is between me and God and not me and you.

It is also not up to you nor I to determine whether or not their "roots" are bad. That judgment, again, is not up to you. You are certainly free to comment on it, but its value is in the eye of the beholder.
 Quoting: Aspamce

The old Germanic and Norse folkways are indeed quite similar to Native American beliefs in many ways.

The old north European Germanic and Norse divinities never required worship or sacrifice.

They are better thought of in the Jungian sense as kinsmen -- archetypal and spectacular kinsmen -- but kinsmen nonetheless.

They are like grandparents or great aunts and uncles we always hear stories about. People say someone is close to a Divinity, the same as he takes after an ancestor.

Ancestors -- But larger than life.

 Quoting: goodmockingbird

Very well said..

One thing I'd like to add..

The Norse believed that the Æsir possessed the greatest power of all..Magic..

From Heimskringla.

"Odin carried with him Mime's head, which told him all the news of other countries. Sometimes even he called the dead out of the earth, or set himself beside the burial-mounds; whence he was called the ghost-sovereign, and lord of the mounds. He had two ravens, to whom he had taught the speech of man; and they flew far and wide through the land, and brought him the news. In all such things he was pre-eminently wise. He taught all these arts in Runes, and songs which are called incantations, and therefore the Asaland people are called incantation-smiths. Odin understood also the art in which the greatest power is lodged, and which he himself practised; namely, what is called magic. By means of this he could know beforehand the predestined fate of men, or their not yet completed lot; and also bring on the death, ill-luck, or bad health of people, and take the strength or wit from one person and give it to another. But after such witchcraft followed such weakness and anxiety, that it was not thought respectable for men to practise it; and therefore the priestesses were brought up in this art. Odin knew finely where all missing cattle were concealed under the earth, and understood the songs by which the earth, the hills, the stones, and mounds were opened to him; and he bound those who dwell in them by the power of his word, and went in and took what he pleased. From these arts he became very celebrated. His enemies dreaded him; his friends put their trust in him, and relied on his power and on himself. He taught the most of his arts to his priests of the sacrifices, and they came nearest to himself in all wisdom and witch-knowledge. Many others, however, occupied themselves much with it; and from that time witchcraft spread far and wide, and continued long."

So in my view, their relationship with the gods, was their way of tapping into a great universal power to their own advantage..Whether it be for luck, bravery, wealth or fertility.

Why?

Because they worship different gods than you do?

Personally, I'd like to see the whole of Europe go back to it's neo-pagan.

Christianity, much like Islam has brought nothing but ruin to any country it's infected.

RUIN? RUIN YOU SAY??

• The Church is the largest single provider of healthcare and education in the world, working especially in some of the poorest countries where there is no other care available. (Catholic church that is. Adding Evangelical church schools/hospitals means there is no close second provider.)

• The United Nations Declaration of Human Rights
In 1948 the UN put forward the declaration of human rights. These rights were so clearly based on Christian principles that some Muslim states objected and refused to sign on that basis because it conflicted with Sharia law. Karl Marx also acknowledged, and rejected, human rights as a product of Christianity. (See further down this page for Christian influence over the Magna Carta.)
Well-known atheist Jurgen Habermas stated that, " the individual morality of conscience, human rights and democracy, is the direct legacy of the Judaic ethic of justice and the Christian ethic of love."

At little while after setup non-Christians such as Prof. Gilbert Murray got involved too. As Canon Milford had always insisted, its work would be underpinned by the principle first established for Quaker relief work during the Franco-Prussian War – that relief should be given on the basis of need, without regard for religion, nationality or ‘side’ in a conflict.

Just to put things into perspective.

The Asatru temple (Norse Gods) will be built in a relatively low visibility area in the tree hill near Reykjavik airport. At the same time the mayor of Reykjavik has given the muslims a landmark area in Reykjavik for their mosque. It will be impossible to enter or leave Reykjavik without seeing the mosque. To see the Norse God temple, the same belief system of those who settled Iceland in AD 874-930 you will have to get directions and transportation to find it.

It should be the opposite way around. The Norse temple should be the landmark area.

Iceland is not building this temple, its actually a group of people who call themselves Ásatrúarfélagið.

This will be a High temple, the only one in the world, since the last one who was built in Upsala Sweden in 1070.

Here you can see what it will look like.
[link to www.mbl.is]

The sun and the numbers 9 and 432000 inspire the design of the building, as they are sacred according to the religion.

Actually, if you read the Eddas, the core literature in the religion, you will see lots Christianity in them.

Like Sólarljóð for example.

Indwelling, hereditary memes.

And if someone thinks I have "bad roots" and am a bad person for honoring both my Anishinaabe Native AND my Germanic heritage...

... at least I am honoring what is mine, and not lamely trying to "graft" myself onto some semitic desert clan.

Sorry, Aspamance, I mean no slight to Christians who honestly follow the teachings of Jesus in word and in deed, and who shed light and compassion upon a troubled world in time of conflict.
 Quoting: goodmockingbird

My friend, there is no need to apologize to me. Honoring one's heritage is what so few people do, and then wonder why societies produce people who feel so alienated and isolated. I, always, welcome your insights.

Re: Iceland to build first temple to Norse gods since Viking age
Awesome! Christianity was forced on them and all of us, I'm glad they are getting back to their real gods.
 Quoting: Apollonian

The Norse offered the early Christian settlers of Europe protection. In exchange, they were made powerful, important figures. I know because I am descended from the first Duke of Normandie who was of the first generation that was baptised. Some became kings, or married the daughters of Kings. They went on to support the Templar, Freemasonry, took part in the Crusades, etc. The first Grand Master Masons were Scottish, of Norse descent (the St. Clairs). Don't act like it wasn't their choice. Much of the imagery and early symbology incorporated into Masonry is Norse, along with Christian, Egyptian, Celtic, etc. Think of it more like an evolution of their belief system ;)

Edit: For what it's worth, I recommend you all spend some time looking into your ancestry. It is not only fascinating, but also helped turn me on to my life's purpose... which is, in part, to undo some of the damage my naive ancestors did.
 Quoting: Henry_StClair

True the kings converted their nation to chritianity willingly, but it's worth to note that the consequence was likely war with the Romans and other converted countries, at some point. A war each nations likely couldn't afford. So basicly they converted to keep exist as said nation.

Re: Iceland to build first temple to Norse gods since Viking age
When the early Roman church got power they forced people to convert by the sword. They banned medicine, dentistry, mathematics, science, many books, schools and even reading and writing except by the clergy. When they started losing the power over the masses then they began to change. They created schools to ensure Catholicism would be taught. After the reformation Christianity began to become a more compassionate faith.

The separation of church and state in the US was the first challenge to forced donations and control of the government by the clergy. The French revolution was about not only about the oppressive control the nobility had but also the church who also had oppressive control and both supported each other.

Many churches have done many good things too. We really don't know that much about faiths before Christianity since most of what was, was destroyed. A lot of propaganda was spread to discredit earlier faiths and sometimes it is hard to separate fact from fiction. Of course there are many thieves in any religion doing good works only to enrich themselves just as many business do. True charity has nothing to do with big business administration and advertising budgets.

What does "in my house there are many mansions" mean to you? To me it says there is no one way to God. God is not an easily insulted dictator.

The religions merged in fact. Over all it was a compromise if the Norse religion and Christianity that is in contemporary culture.

But there is still much prejudice toward the Norse religion sadly, I guess mainly due to hatred of Paganism.

And the lack of understanding of it.

Which is pitiful really. If others want respect for their beliefs they should give it too
