It was a very beautiful religion ...

And sadly the " blonde bimbo" nonsense caught on.

I think everyone should be free to practice their religions as long as they are not hurting anyone.

If the people behind building this temple are reading this thread, I'll bet they're like, "Yikes! We just wanted to construct an awesome tourist attraction with a lucrative gift shop."scared

he he I'm sure you right, this is more an honoring their ancestors thing, than a real Norse lifestyle change.

If they could somehow reform Norse into modern way of living, it could catch on. I might even join tha movement, I can't deny my Norse blood in my veins. I think many in the nordic country would love to call themself norse again.

We really really need our Norse idendity back. It would do wonders for the people of the north, we are a mess culture and idendity wise at the moment. Islam gaining more and more ground for that reason alone.

Re: Iceland to build first temple to Norse gods since Viking age
The spread of Christianity

At the beginning of the Viking Age, mainstream Europe was predominantly Christian. The one exception was the Norse people, who had their own pagan beliefs. Vikings who travelled abroad became more exposed to Christianity. The Norse living in the homelands also became convinced of God's power by visiting missionaries and priests. The Norse population gradually began to accept Christianity. The old religion slowly disappeared as even those who had strong faith in their pagan gods were cruelly forced by Scandinavian kings to convert to Christianity.

As Christianity spread amongst the Norse people, it contributed to the decrease in Viking power. The Norse people no longer practised their pagan beliefs, which placed such great importance on war. Being killed during a battle was believed to be the highest honour which could be bestowed on a warrior. In contrast, Christianity encouraged a more peaceful way of life. The conversion to Christianity resulted in the Vikings losing interest in raiding and, as an alternative, turning their attention to trading. A combination of all of these factors forced the Nordic countries to emerge, for the first time, as part of Christian Europe.

Actually, the religions of the native Europeans were pretty peaceful. When we went to war it was over land and slaves, not religion, and a weregild was paid so the families of those who on the losing side who died didn't starve. It really is a shame you have forgotten your heritage, unless you're not a native Briton…

The Norse offered the early Christian settlers of Europe protection. In exchange, they were made powerful, important figures. I know because I am descended from the first Duke of Normandie who was of the first generation that was baptised. Some became kings, or married the daughters of Kings. They went on to support the Templar, Freemasonry, took part in the Crusades, etc. The first Grand Master Masons were Scottish, of Norse descent (the St. Clairs). Don't act like it wasn't their choice. Much of the imagery and early symbology incorporated into Masonry is Norse, along with Christian, Egyptian, Celtic, etc. Think of it more like an evolution of their belief system ;)

Edit: For what it's worth, I recommend you all spend some time looking into your ancestry. It is not only fascinating, but also helped turn me on to my life's purpose... which is, in part, to undo some of the damage my naive ancestors did.
 Quoting: Henry_StClair

True the kings converted their nation to chritianity willingly, but it's worth to note that the consequence was likely war with the Romans and other converted countries, at some point. A war each nations likely couldn't afford. So basicly they converted to keep exist as said nation.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 57962801

Well..Icelanders converted to Christianity basically because the Norwegian king had kidnapped the sons of a
few Icelandic chieftains. A deal was made to accept Christianity but with the benefits of being allowed to worship the Norse gods behind closed doors as well as being allowed to continue eating horse meat.

Iceland never fully stopped being pagan.
The worshipping of Odin and Thor lessened with time, but in their place came elves and their elf churches; the hidden people, trolls and last but not least the ghosts (well actually the were here during viking era as well). I'm not kidding..every other person here in Iceland either sees dead people or knows someone who does 😉
Heck..Even the Raven is still our fav bird, seen here as window ornaments, on our coffee cups and on our bed covers..

Many years ago in high school, I took American Government class in summer school to graduate early. We had an exchange teacher from Iceland - 22 years old, 6ft 4in, long blonde hair and blue eyes, named Thor. Not a single girl missed a day of class. eyebat

As a black man with limited knowledge on Norse and viking culture other than the exploits and explorations of the various tribes, is say go ahead, there is nothing wrong with having pride and reverence for your culture.

But as a Christian, if this culture contradicts the empirically, intrinsically sound rules and desires of the one true, REAL God, Jehovah, then you should shed any part of that culture off, and only have pride on the part of the culture that will not diminish the presence in the mind of people.

Have pride in the way your ancestors lived, the clothes, the food, the architecture, the songs, ceremonies, just ways of going about your daily life. But here this, proud Nords. The aspects of this proud culture dealing with any kind of worship or reverence for Gods, or even if you are not directly worshipping these Gods, but only honoring and recognizing the meaning, enigma and lessons the idea of those Gods portray,, as the article states, is still going against the one true God. An above poster said that she is a Christian, but still ascribes to this. Impossible.

It is either one or the other. To those who don't believe in the one true God, Jehovah. Get right. Now.

And believes in hospitality and respect.

Although within any groups as you know there are exceptions to the rule but they have their own racist agendas anyway.

I think it can be seen as similar to African religions in that it has many archetypes within it.

The same way Africans practiced things before the Christians took over and called everyone there a witch.

Excellent. It is past time that white people honor their roots and culture.

I am beyond sick of hearing from turd worlders that we have no culture. Reality is that white culture is also thousands of years old and must be honored and preserved in our homelands.
 Quoting: Lady Jane Smith

Amen to that! I make it a point to teach my grandchildren about white history and their heritage. My oldest is in 3rd grade, but does 8th grade level work. He really gets into the history lessons. We have a lot of Scottish ancestry and have taken the kids to the local Scottish festival for the past couple of years. We let them each pick out a souvenir and last time the oldest grandchild picked out a chanter. He's getting pretty good at it. Maybe someday we'll buy him his own set of bagpipes.

I believe that's how its viewed...

When others demand religious freedom and respect its shocking that they wont give the same respect back.

Re: Iceland to build first temple to Norse gods since Viking age
The first permanent settlers of Iceland were Christians. Inndeed Iceland is one of a few countries worldwide if not the only one first settled by Christians. Long before the Vikings, Irish had setlled there, confirmed in the "Landnamssaga" the Icelandic Book of Settlement written in the 12th century...

In the year 1000 Iceland converted to Christianity by a parliament decision. Paganism was not banned but had to be performed in privacy.

Iceland has been Christian since first catholic then protestant for over 1000 years. You can easily check this fact by the number of churches around the island.

People are turning away from christianity big time in the nordic countries. noone go to church anymore. Only for the shallow marriage ceremony, and when people die and need to be buried.
Noone belive in the stories anymore or say prayers or praise Jesus. The youth laugh at all that stuff, and have for a couple of generations by now.
It's actually bit of a shame cause there are many good teachings but I think people take them as natural way of living, they don't need to be reminded anymore of how to be good persons, but I'm not sure that true. We can still learn to take better care of each other.

People also use the Inqusitions and burning people at a stake and such horrors done in the religions name as reason to turn their back. It's hard to argue aginst such things to be honest.
The thing we lost though, is the fellow identity through christianity, that has weaken the people overal I think.
