Notice here - what happens during this earthquake in Jerusalem; and the remnant(144K witnesses) were afraid:

Rev 11:13 “And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.”
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75226537

So why was there an earthquake at this point in time.

Because the inhabitants were rejoicing over the death of God's 2 'special witnesses' and the fact that the antichrist killed them.

However, 3 days after they were killed - God raised them from the dead and ascended them to heaven.

However, this isn't what frightened the remnant - they'd already been to heaven.

It was The power of God that shook the earth so violently - that a 10th of Jerusalem collapsed, killing 7000 men.

And I'm assuming we are in for quite a few of these in the near future:

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75174507

Rev 11:14 The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly.

15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

----

At this point satan is no longer the god of the world - "The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ"
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75245325

Here are the verses that make it a complete picture. Just pulling a verse out here and there is not enough to understand what is actually going on.

I'll start with the last post first - Satan is kicked out of heaven and becomes the god of this world.

Rev 12:9-12 (KJV)
9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

12...Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75249457

But before satan is cast out of heaven, we see God commissioning his 2 witnesses to spread the gospel.

Rev 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

There are still many to be saved before it's too late

Rev 11:6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy

Biblehub:

Description of the miraculous power with which the two witnesses are furnished in order, until their testimony is finished,[2843] to ward off their enemies, and to attest their divine commission. The particular features of the description, viz., Rev 11:6, are derived from the histories of Elias and Moses. Even this retrospective allusion, acknowledged by all expositors, to the miracles of those ancient prophets which are in no way understood allegorically, of itself renders it in the highest degree improbable that the description here is meant to be allegorical...

Rev 11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt

If we recall what happened to Sodom Genesis 19

This city had become so decadent that God decided to completely wipe it from the face of the earth.

Rev 11:8 is telling us, he has the same feelings about Jerusalem at this point.

Which makes it an even bigger travesty is Jerusalem ends up like it does.

Jesus' death is lost on this evil crowd, being that it's of no significance to them; wrongly thinking there are no consequences.

So do we know who these witnesses will be?

Nope

But there are many who are speculating that it will be either Enoch, Moses and Elijah:

Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD

Rev 11:10 ...and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another

They are so happy - they are even giving each other gifts; when they haven't a clue they were being offered the greatest gift of all.

Daniel 12

And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book....

4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: ....knowledge shall be increased.

Rev 11:9 ...and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves

They want the world to see the fate of anyone who dares preach the gospel!!!

Rev 11:10 ...because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

Somehow the message they were preaching affected and offended everyone.

It's as though they couldn't just turn it off.

Perhaps it transcended the normal modes of communications - such as the internet or phone lines.

Rev 11:11 And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet...

It's significant to me that God says 3 and a half days instead of just 3 days.

The number 3 and 3 1/2 appears continuously in the bible.

The number 3 itself accurs hundreds of times:

We are at a point in history that this prophecy can easily be fulfilled

Matthew 24:33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
