1:11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send [it] unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

Commentary:

Saying I am Alpha and Omega

These words have been omitted from other translations for apparently they are not in the original. The Revised Standard Version has "Write what you see in a book and send it to the Seven Churches..."

What thou seest, write in a book

John is about to see the first of many remarkable visions, the like of which no man has ever witnessed, and he is told to make sure it is carefully recorded so that others may be able to share these wonderful things.

And send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia

The order in which the churches are listed here in this verse and in chapters 2 and 3 represent the geographical sequence in which a messenger carrying a letter from Patmos, would reach these seven cities in the province of Asia. 'Acts of the Apostles', p. 585 says "The names of the seven churches are symbolic of the church in different periods of the Christian era. The number seven indicates completeness, and is symbolic of the fact that the messages extend to the end of time, while the symbols used reveal the condition of the church at different periods in the history of the world."

Unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Sardis, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

The seven churches are the first in a series of sevens in the Revelation. As applied to the seven churches, this number has a specific purpose. There were more than seven churches in the province of Asia but the Lord evidently chose the seven churches here named because they are typical of the condition of the church as a whole.

Continuing with Revelation

1:12 And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;

You understand that we cannot see a voice. This is saying, I turned to see where this voice was coming from.

This is not one candlestick with seven flutes, but rather seven separate stands. John wants us to see, not the happenings, but the one that causes it to happen. This revealing is not of historical events but revealing Jesus to us. One thing we see by the seven separate candlesticks is that there is light enough for each of these churches. They can have their own light.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69259204

1:13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks [one] like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

Christ was wearing the robe of the High Priest. John states He was "clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle." In the Old Testament, the high priests wore full length robes with a girdle made of fine linen, embroidered with needlework, secured around their waist. In this vision, Christ had on the robe of a high priest, but the girdle He wore around His chest was made of gold, which denotes the dignity of an important office and signifies His office as our Great High Priest "But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them." (Hebrews 7 verses 24 to 25)

The fifth seal of revelation is where you see christians under the alter asking God when will their deaths be avenged.

God tells them to be patient - because more will be killed as they were:

Christian persecution at 'unprecedented' levels

Christian persecution at 'unprecedented' levels - 273 per day – 100,000 a year – killed for faith

Bishop John McAreavey, who’s also the chairman of the Council for Justice & Peace of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference, said the attacks are underreported but have hit unprecedented levels, Breitbart said.

Daily, 273 die for their Christian faith, which translates into 11 each hour, he said. And those numbers don’t even include those who are “tortured, imprisoned, exiled, threatened, excluded, attacked and discriminated against on a widespread scale,” McAreavey said.

He presented his findings before the Joint Committee of Foreign Affairs and Trade, during which he also referred to Christianity as the most oppressed religion in the world.

White is a symbol of purity. John grasps for an accurate description of what he sees in vision. At first he thinks of wool then he thinks of an even whiter substance, snow.

And His eves were as a flame of fire

A symbol of the penetrating glance of the Son of man, who is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the mind.

When we SEE earthquakes in diverse places:

Strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake hits near Solomon Islands

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, which measured the quake at magnitude 6.9, said that based in its available data, no tsunami was expected. The quake originally measuring a 7.0 was later downgraded to a 6.8 by the USGS. The South Pacific nations are still recovering from a devastating cyclone that hit the region in March

The Man of Sin and Lawlesness is already here and in play.

The spirit of antichrist has already infected the world

Satan has already been thrown down.

False Prophets have infected the churches

Israel is hated by all nations.

Christians are the most persecuted people on this earth.

Earthquakes are already happening in diverse places.

Judgements on Nations are already taking place

Wickedness has abound.

Welcome to the GREAT TRIBULATION.

It is not yet the Great tribulation but it is to come soon, you will know the difference in that time. May you endure in faith unto death and be not deceived by the Antichrist to renounce God.

Possibly the sound of fast flowing rapids or waterfalls.

Jesus said many will be offended, or political correctness will be rampant.

IMHO satan uses it via the internet to control the world.

Daniel 7:23 (the beast) devours the entire world.

Here's an article from a pastor who believes it will take away all freedoms we have:

Forcing men to pay taxes “for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors” is indeed sinful and ... enough. But to compel a man to actively PARTICIPATE in ideas he disbelieves and abhors is even more so. And, that, my friends, is exactly what modern political correctness forces us to do--or at least tries to force us to do. Political correctness attempts to strip us of our own sense of right and wrong......

The thing is....there have been many interpretations of our Holy Bible, I do not think any one of you can honestly say we are not already in the Tribulation. I'm not sure but I pray every day that I am saved and that HE comes back to get his chosen people. Everything is very hateful now already so I don't know what kind of doom you are searching for. FEAR AND HATE has been the push for years now..... It's going to get REALLY BAD SOON, this I do know and feel deeply. Pray HE RETURNS SOONhfhfhf

Definitely are in tribulation.

Thing is we have the first 3 seals in full swing: global world order, war and food prices soaring & the 5th seal where christians are beheaded and persecuted.

The 4th seal is 1/4 population of the world dies.

Now this is over 2 billion people that are killed.

This is what I'm expecting, unless it's an accumulation of deaths since Israel's rebirth.

Otherwise - things will become so catastrophic we'll all be begging for God's mercy.

REVELATION 1:16
And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

And He had in His right hand seven stars

The right hand is a symbol of God's power to sustain. The Seven stars represent the 'angels' or messengers sent to the churches. 'Gospel Workers' pp. 13, 14 says: "God's ministers are symbolized by the seven stars which He who is the first and the last has under His special care and protection. The sweet influences that are to be abundant in the church are bound up with these ministers of God who are to represent the love of Christ."

And out of His mouth went a sharp twoedged sword

Out of His mouth

This is highly symbolic language. John repeats this symbol in chs. 2:12, 16; 19:15, 21 where it is a symbol of divine judgment. The fact that the sword is sharp indicates that it is able to cut deeply, and that it has two cutting edges makes it a symbol of judgment in the setting of the Sanctuary.

The Scripture makes it plain that Christ is the Judge in the Sanctuary. Acts 10:42 says: "And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead." 2 Corinthians 5:10 says: "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that everyone may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad." John 5:22 says: "For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:" The Father is not the Judge but rather He acts as a supreme counsel who gives the final word of approval or disapproval.

The Father has given into the hands of the Son the successful accomplishment of the work of redemption. The Son who became man and gave His life for the human race, is the rightful One to judge those who have rejected Him. He alone knows the full power of temptation; He alone has borne the sins of the world.

And His countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength

It was so brilliant and dazzling that it was almost too much for the human eye to behold.

In Mathew 24 Jesus' disciples ask when will the world end?

Jesus answered and said - When you SEE ALL these things - this is the generation that will see all prophecy fulfilled (Math 24:33).

He literally means seeing, i.e. through webcams, videos, computers etc.

What are ALL the things we shall SEE?

Earthquakes, disease and wars in many places around the world. (Math 24:7)

Only in this generation has this been possible - at these websites:

ds.iris.edu/seismon/;
outbreaks.globalincidentmap.com/

Ancients didn't have the ability to SEE or know of earthquakes and disease on the other side of the world i.e. Alaska etc - nor would they care?

We should care however, because Jesus tells us these things will start out slowly like birth pangs and accelerate to apocalyptic levels. When this happens (and they are accelerating), we'll have a sign the end is near.

Next - When we SEE "the evil one" in the temple from a field or rooftop - this is the start of Great Tribulation.

Why would Jesus use the examples field or rooftop?

How would you SEE "satan's man" standing in the holy place from a field?

Only way I know is with a mobile device i.e. smartphone. Therefore this prophecy couldn't happen until we had mobile devices.

This "evil person" will be so arrogant, he'll have his conquest of Jerusalem streamed live to the internet - for all to see and hear his declaration that he is greater than the God of the universe. (2 Thes 2).

Keep in mind only a priest can enter the "holy place" - so no worshipers will be in there.

Additionally, he gives a dire warning for those in Judeae/Jerusalem flee to mountains. where God has prepared a place of safety for them. (Math 24:15-18, 21) .

Every example he uses is very carefully chosen, and conveys something important, and relevant to the entire world.

He tells us we will NOT be caught unaware - that these things will happen all together; not one here or there - ALL.

Here are some more prophecies that require internet:

The gospel will be preached unto all the nations of the earth and then "the end". (Math 24:14)

All will be required to take a mark of the beast to buy or sell. (Rev 13:16). With so many people in the world today, we need computers to keep track of everyone - and THEY are doing this already.

All will SEE his (antichrist) image move and speak, and be required to worship this image that is alive and can move and speak. (Rev 13:15)

Hmmmm - TV, youtube, computer, mobile device.

All will SEE the antichrist kill 2 witnesses in Jerusalem. After 3 days God will have them rise on their feet, and ascend into heaven in front of the whole world.

Ezekiel 39:21 - ALL will SEE God punish the nations that attack Israel in the gog magog war (coming soon).

All this will be accomplished in one generation.

ALL these things must be happening simultaneously also:

evil abounding - love grows cold: porn number one industry on internet. No shortage examples evilness on internet today.
many offended - political correctness to point can't say something without being killed, fired or going to jail.
christians beheaded - on youtube and other places nonetheless.
Jesus will be hated - we know satan is trying to rid the world of anything having to do with Jesus.
many false prophets - oh yeah
many claim to be christ - yep - but the "real fake" is yet to come.

I'll talk about Israel separately - because it offends many :)

You missed the hidden context.
The Jewish disciples ask Jesus about His return to Israel, to the chosen people(the Jews) as prophesied by the prophets. So these are the things Jews will See and Hear, not necessarily the entire world.
Verse 2 says "see all these" referring to the temple stones, but does not mean for the world to actually witness the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. Only the Jewish people. So no Internet or technology is required.

The destruction of technology as we know it will occur either before or around this time anyway. If you know Revelations, Ezekiel chapter 39 and Zechariah chapter 14 and also interpret them just as literally, you will see this.
For these armies use no modern technology or weaponry in attacking Israel. Thus logically, none exists.(you don't bring swords, spears and horses to fight machine guns, planes and tanks).
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 67861897

Guerilla warfare.
Just look at the wars in the middle east and what people can accomplish with crude weaponry.

Also just to add to what the O.P is saying about modern technology playing a huge part in prophecy..

I've seen quite a few pictures of shepherds in fields herding sheep and bullock with a mobile in their hands.
So even countries that you think are 3rd world can access or are near some form of modern technology..

Revelation 1:14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire.

His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow

White is a symbol of purity. John grasps for an accurate description of what he sees in vision. At first he thinks of wool then he thinks of an even whiter substance, snow.

And His eves were as a flame of fire

A symbol of the penetrating glance of the Son of man, who is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the mind.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69269128

REVELATION 1:15
And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace: and his voice as the sound of many waters.

And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burn in a furnace

The feet looked like brass that had been subjected to intense heat, they were dazzling in appearance. It must have been very hard for John to describe these visions of heavenly splendour.

And His voice as the sound of many waters

Possibly the sound of fast flowing rapids or waterfalls.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69269128

Mobile devices are helping to improve literacy rates in the developing world. Unesco has teamed up with Worldreader and Nokia to outline the positive link between mobile and improved literacy across some of the world's most impoverished regions.

Yep, we will ALL SEE "AC" standing in the holy place.

1:19 Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;

Verse19 is the key verse that unlocks the door to the entire outline of the book. It is further evidence of the threefold division of this great Revelation. John was told expressly by Christ to write, what you have seen: To write the things which were. The things he saw, all that was revealed to him through the different visions.

What is now: To write the things which are, (referring to the condition of the churches in Asia Minor at that time), and what will take place later: To write concerning the things which were to come: The events which would happen in the future as God fulfilled His end time plan. The literal translation of Rev. 4 v.1 reads "things which must be after these things" meaning that the things of Revelation chapters 4-22 must be fulfilled after the "things" revealed pertaining to the churches in Revelation chapters 2-3.

John is commissioned of Jesus to write these things down so that they will be of use to all who read it. He is also telling John not to leave anything out.

The potentially fatal virus is similar to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS, which broke out in China in 2002. Fifteen cases of MERS have been detected in South Korea.

Re: Prophecies Jesus gave in Mathew 24 and Revevelation require internet and smartphone
To the OP of this thread and anyone else who has been misled by false teachers concerning Matt 24 and what Jesus said.

First of all, they WERE prophecies. Secondly, Jesus said that THIS (meaning the people he was speaking to) generation will SEE these things. Thirdly, those "things" happened about 40 years after Jesus said them.

They are NOT about modern day times. NOT NOT NOT

Anyone who READS the account can figure this out.

Three questions were asked of Jesus at the beginning. He answered their first two, and the answer was ALL ABOUT what was to come in 70AD.....the destruction of Jerusalem by the abomination of desolation standing in the Holy Place. (that being the Roman Army destroying the temple, and how to escape that judgement)

The third question was about His return. And He said there would be NO signs. NO warnings. So if you are looking for earthquakes, wars, rumors of wars, etc to WARN you of Christ's coming......you have been FOOLED AGAIN.

It is VERY simple folks. Prophecy has been FULFILLED IN CHRIST. There is ONLY ONE THING LEFT.

Christ's return/our judgement. And again, if you think there is a SIGN to look for, you are sadly mistaken.

The Word tells us that ONLY the Father knows that day.

I concur this is correct
We could go into detail, but there is no real need.

Take this for what it is

One thing is said to happen before jesus return
The man of sin has to be revealed first

Now that man of sin can only be two things

It is either the papacy or you.

If you you have a way out by the blood of christ.
If the papacy then he has been revealed.

These things can't happen without the internet and smartphone:

Seeing earthquakes in diverse places:

[link to ds.iris.edu]

---------

Seeing the Antichrist in the temple from a field or housetop. This is only possible with smartphone:

Mathew 24:18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

This is not planned. It's urgent, unanticipated.

----------

We need the internet to spread the gospel to ALL nations. Not one or 2 But ALL nations.

Mathew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

------------

Lastly, The rapture hasn't happened:

37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
