Obviously, the ancient heathens would worship anything - even trees:

Most of the ancient gods of the Heathens used to be worshipped in groves. And groves and trees themselves were worshipped; so Tacitus says of the Germans, that they consecrated groves and forests, and called them by the names of gods....

God decided enough was enough and here we find the first of many, many judgements against the Israelis for their transgressions:

Judges 3:8 Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.
 Quoting: b4its2l8

And when the Israelis repented - God delivered them out of the hands of Chushanrishathaim.

Of course, it wasn't long before they returned to their evil ways:

Judges 3:9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them

---

12 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord.
 Quoting: b4its2l8

This time their captivity lasted 10 years longer:

Judges 3:14 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
 Quoting: b4its2l8

Judges 3:15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised them up a deliverer...

Apparently it takes the Israelis a long time to figure out, all they have to do is repent and God will save them.

It was true then - it is true in these last days:

Joel 2:12 Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:

13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

19 Yea, the LORD will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen
