Alarm Bells Toll for Human Civilization as World's 12th Largest Mega-City is Running Out of Water.

The São Paulo water crisis, or “hydric collapse," has left this city of 20 million teetering on the brink. The sudden nature of the crisis has left people struggling to cope with the reality of the taps running dry. Residents of São Paulo are storing water at home, and in some cases drilling homemade wells. In part a result of badly stored water, instances of dengue fever spread by mosquitoes almost tripled in January, compared with the previous year.

"I’d always imagined people would try and help each other out in a crisis situation, but it’s not what happened at all" ~Isabela Berger Sacramento

March 3rd, 2015: In Brazil, a land of immense natural riches and home to around 12% of the world’s fresh water, the very idea of a water shortage is hard for people to conceive of. Yet despite the state government’s prevarication over possible imminent rationing – consisting of two days of water followed by four days without – in reality, millions are now getting just a few hours of water per day, with many struggling with none at all for days on end.

Catastrophic situations often foster solidarity, but a lack of resources tends to do the opposite, leading to chaos

During the crisis, one resident went to Sabesp, São Paulo’s water board, to find out when the water would be returning. “I told the man who was working there that the apartment building over the road had water, and yet we did not,” she says. “He said, ‘They may have water for now, but it’s going to run out for everyone soon’. He said there were some areas where the people had been without water for two months.”

“We spent four days without water, and we saw what it was like. We saw people behave like animals in our building, so imagine 20 million people.”

But this isn't a story about Sao Paulo; it's a report that dares to point out that human societies are incredibly shortsighted and nearly incapable of sustainably populating planet Earth. In numerous regions around the world -- including California, India, Oklahoma, Brazil, China and many more -- human populations are rapidly out-growing the capacity of their local water systems. Even though keeping populations alive requires food... and growing food requires water... almost no nation or government in the world seems to be able to limit water consumption of local populations to levels which are sustainable in the long term.

Instead, the endless greed of the "grow-consume-profit" business model that dominates the global economy leaves no room for any hint of balance with nature. The overriding philosophy of modern business is to dominate nature with chemicals, mining and monoculture to maximize profit while kicking any really large problems down the road for the next generation to deal with.

The result is a world where nobody thinks about the long-term implications of today's trends because everybody's too busy trying to extract a buck or two out of the very system that will destroy their future.

Vegas, Phoenix and Tucson will also run dry:

Consider Las Vegas while you ponder all this: Here's a city with no water future whatsoever, continuing to build new casinos and grow its population even as the water level of Lake Mead has already dropped to emergency levels (and continues to plummet). What do the people of Las Vegas imagine they will drink when all the cheap, easy water is gone? Will they swallow dust and pretend it's water?

The sobering truth is that nearly everyone who lives in Las Vegas doesn't think about this. By definition, anyone who realized the truth about the disappearing water throughout Nevada, Arizona and California would have already sold their property and moved away. Those who still inhabit regions with unsustainable water supplies -- such as Sao Paulo -- are choosing to make believe the problem doesn't exist.

This delusional psychology is, of course, reflected across modern human civilization and its governments, where delusional rhetoric and make believe fantasies about "endless economic growth" keep the obedient masses toiling away day after day, hoping they are securing a future which has already been mortgaged away.

I live in the part of NJ that gave it the name "the Garden State".

People mock NJ, and the average survivalist would never think of moving here (with some good reasons).

But we have water. They say there is enough underneath the Pine Barrens to last a million years. Philly tried and tried to get it, but NJ never let them.

Most years there is adequate rain for excellent "dryland farming", ie, the only irrigation I ever see is the sod farms. Some years I watered my tomatoes only a few times.

Water. It really matters.

BILLIONS of people already live under conditions of water scarcity, as I tried to explain a jackass on here the day before yesterday.

Yep. I live in one of those areas... beautiful, remote and... arid. People keep moving here with their city water 'needs' with no concept of what will happen one day soon.

The ancient aquifers, slow to recharge, are being tapped and the water tables are dropping at an alarming rate. We left southern Arizona about 10 years ago for this very reason and relocated to the Great Lakes.

It might not happen in our lifetimes but we didn't want the kids to get stuck there.

Re: DISASTER SHOCK: Alarm Bells Toll for Human Civilization as World's 12th Largest Mega-City is Running Out of Water.
here's what i got to say, that's not to controversial or long winded.
I live on a boat at anchor, in the middle of a lake. I row to shore in a dinghy.
shore is about 400 yards away.
I used to haul water from a faucet at the jack n the box but got tired of that and I rigged up a rainwater catchment off the fore deck of my boat. about 100 sq. ft. I have a dry compost toilet. i bath with a cloth and a bowl of water. I use less than a gallon of water a day. I have more water than I can store, over 200 gallons storage capacity. just from rainfall.
What I am saying is That the people who are suffering like this, why have they not started to reduce their water usage and also capture the rain? one person only needs about a 10x10 ft. area to survive, and some ingenuity, not much, but a little. some initiative.
the situation, the catastrophe that will occur will be most difficult for those who can not think, who can not solve problems, or who have no initiative. People who will suffer and die waiting for the gov. to come and rescue them.
i am sure there are some who are doing this, and what they are doing will get around and be done by others, you'd think this would have to be the case. but 20 million people living on top of each other, just isn't normal and it presents sanitation problems. If everyone was careful, and thought about what they were doing, it could work, but that isn't the case.
it seems to me that people will be forced to reflect on things, like what is a society and what and who they are, when death becomes real and the whole system fails. Stepping back and looking at this it makes sense, the result of a great imbalance of life, a great ignorance.

AND as long as they listen to the Catholic Priests and the Pope who tell them that birth control is a sin, it will get worse.

Most of those 20 million people are under 25 years old and in the prime of their breeding years. Many of those young girls will give birth five or ten times. Many of those children will be thrown out into the streets to fend for themselves as soon as they can walk.

It is the overpopulation that is causing the crisis. The region was never meant to support that many people.

A Similar problem is arising in Egypt along the Nile which can no longer sustain the rapidly doubling population there.

It's dystopian future time.

They will have to wear water conserving suits and breathe out through their noses like in the old story Dune.

Drink pee like in the movie Waterworld. Pee, it's what's for breakfast, and recycling your own pee has reported health benefits.

And then they will have to liquefy their plant matter and other carbon based life matter into water and chemicals. Then they'll have to stop using things that use water like indoor plumbing and soda pop, and industrial...things. When I say liquefy, I also mean....CORPSES! Body is 70 percent fluids, water and minerals. Certain funeral homes have corpse liquefaction services available, add enough acids and bases and that body turns to water washed down the sewer drain. E-co-logical.

Eat me drink me.

So, unless they revolt and make war against their neighbors to expand their borders, or immigrate out, or pipeline or whatever to get stuff done, they will have to die to get to economy of water for the people.

I suppose then beer is out of the things to have when water is important -- imagine, all that water lost in the brewing process, can't have that.

Fuck me sideways, silly humans.

We survived as a species for a really long time cuz we were all migratory and lived sustainable lives utilizing the resources at hand.

Then we got all technologically advanced and smart and settled down in groups in permanent locales, attempting to thwart mother nature with our wily human brains.

Unfortunately, we're a bit too dumb collectively to see the forest for the trees, be it from the chemtrails, fluoride or religion, and now we think we can bend the climate to our will rather than the other way round.

Personally, I'm of the persuasion that this faulty logic is due to a disconnect with our earthly roots, largely brought upon by modern religious indoctrination, which convinces toddlers they are apart from the whole, not a part OF the whole.

Either way, the consequences will likely be disastrous for most, what with humanity largely putting its eggs in one basket, or several major high population density areas, the case may be.

Ok. So where is all the water going then? We use it and goes into the sewer. Most cities have a treatment plant that reclaims some, not all water. There is lack of rain but the water doesn't leave the planet. Or does it? Think people. Where is it going? If it doesn't rain than the sea levels should be rising or ice/glacial ice should be accelerating somewhere in the world.

Re: DISASTER SHOCK: Alarm Bells Toll for Human Civilization as World's 12th Largest Mega-City is Running Out of Water.

I've been advocating this for years.
No one pays any attention at all, including the morans in
southern California.

I think idiocy is at the point where we will see people
sit by resources and die because no one is putting it in
their mouths.

Covering up land with hardscapes that drains directly into the ocean was not an intelligent decision.

Aquifers continue to drop where saltwater had sunk.

Our ability/need to harvest water was lost on central planners.

How many more dominos will fall before this is addressed?

It'll make a great case to increase water taxes though.
