An important unresolved question about Jupiter’s moon Ganymede is whether Ganymede harbors a subsurface water ocean under its icy crust. Galileo magnetometer data are equally consistent with an internal dipole magnetic field plus an induced magnetic field in a saline ocean and with a model with dipole plus quadrupole without induced signal, hence the existence of an internal ocean is not definite (Kivelson et al., Icarus, 2002). Here we present a new means to address this question through observations of Ganymede’s two auroral ovals whose locations are controlled by Ganymede’s magnetic field environment. Due to Jupiter’s time-variable magnetic field, the locations of Ganymede’s auroral ovals are expected to rock towards and away from Jupiter. A saline, electrically conductive water ocean will modify the time-variable field due to electromagnetic induction effects and will reduce the rocking.

"The world will soon wake up to the reality that everyone is broke and can collect nothing from the bankrupt, who are owed unlimited amounts by the insolvent, who are attempting to make late payments on a bank holiday in the wrong country, with an unacceptable currency, against defaulted collateral, of which nobody is sure who holds title."

Woohoo! 5a

Jupiter's largest moon could have a salty ocean 10x deeper than Earth's!

Some kind of satellites which will analyze Earth's magnetic field. I wonder why?hmm

Well the mission stands for "Magnetic Multiscale" and will study the magnetic field around the Earth on smaller and smaller scales.
