I understand your frustration. I've been watching this cycle as you have for a long time. I always hope Israel will make the tough decisions and move reality on the ground forward, but they never do. I'm just skeptical. After the results of Cast Lead, and then Protective Edge, I feel jaded, that's all.

Noble, good points. I would just add that Iran is watching all this. The response time of the IAF. The current position of the tanks. Number of flights/sorties the IAF will do when a barrage comes. How much fuel the IAF is burning, so Iran knows when refuel times would occur. Once Iran has the data they want. The the big escalation will come from the north and Golan.

Like Jazzy said, Iran is behind the 8 ball right now. They have to go all in or lose it all. The protests are growing, fears of younger officers plotting coups etc.

As a Marine, I take slight offense to that, but that being said, look at the level of tactical flexibility given. It's NOT a permanent force to settle in. I don't know what their contingency plans are and if I did, I couldn't say. That being said, just think of the possibilities. If this shit snaps off severely, all assets will be utilized for whatever mission/ops they're ordered to handle.

Ok. Maybe I haven't made myself clear enough. I wasn't presenting the notion that a MEU was going to hold off Iran for occupation, but in terms of having a level of tactical flexibility on the field when needed for a diversion, quick tactical strikes and such, the MEU works great on that level if utilized properly. A carrier strike force can't do it all by itself. I'm talking about a worse-case scenario that causes the MEU to be utilized. I'm no fool about the MEU standing against the whole of Iran. That makes no sense, but if they're needed to ensure the Strait of Hormuz is to be open, then that option has to be on the table somewhere. Should Iran opt to intervene against Israel, you truly believe POTUS and the JCS wouldn't have them on the table as option to use, even at the diversionary level to ensure Israel doesn't fall? Occupation isn't the answer. It's called having Iran's attentions divided. Make them use up their assets in another direction other than Israel. It would be risky, but not impossible to do. That's the point I'm making because in the end, Israel will need her allies and if that means the USN/USMC forces in the region are her best ticket in town to deter Iran until larger forces are mobilized in the region to render assistance, then that's how it could be played.

That would seem to be a rational thought. However, it depends on just who is in charge over there. Turkey is led by a want to be Sultan. Iran is loaded with loons expecting the Mahdi to come when the situation is properly developed. Developed means a great war with devastation everywhere. Some actually want the devastation to begin.
