Ok, asked Janey if she was hearing anything from the Russian/Israeli meeting and this is her reply...

The one interesting thing that I have seen coming out of there is that both sides are agreeing a framework for naval operations off Syria, which I took as quite interesting.

They are talking at a technical level on avoiding jamming each other in Syrian airspace, recognising each other and all that paraphernalia.

Israel, however, insists that she has the right to strike in to Syria against any threat to Israel, regardless of Russian operations.

In essence I was told earlier the gist of the conversation was "you do your thing in Syria, we will do ours and let's keep out of each others way". That came to me from a senior IDF source. Russia was hoping that Israel wouldn't cross in to Syria or strike Syrian golan etc and was told Israel will protect herself regardless of other state actors in Syria.

Iran Parliament Committee Approves Nuclear Deal, With Conditions

"An committee of Iran’s conservative-dominated parliament gave its support on Sunday to Iran’s nuclear agreement with world powers on condition there would be no foreign inspections of military sites and no curbs on developing its missile program. These proposals, contained in a report by a special parliamentary committee evaluating the agreement, could become law if passed by the assembly..."

The US gave Netanyahu an ultimatum against the expansion of settlement construction

According to senior-level Israeli officials, the US Administration passed on a threatening message to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, according to which if Israel were to approve an expansion of settlement construction in the West Bank, the US would not veto a UN Security Council proposal that deems Israeli settlements are illegal.

‘US won’t veto UN vote on settlements if Israel builds anew’

Should West Bank construction resume in response to terrorism, Washington won’t block resolution branding settlements illegal, report says

The United States has reportedly issued Israel an ultimatum this week: announce new settlement construction and Washington won’t veto a Security Council resolution declaring West Bank settlements illegal.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected calls by senior ministers for construction in Jewish settlements in the West Bank in response to an increase in Palestinian terrorism, at a meeting of his security cabinet on Monday.

Thread: Russia's Strategy in Syria

Point 13.

And more to the point, I posted a comment a few months ago when Turkey started to "bomb" ISIS. I made the argument that Turkey's real interest in Kurdistan and that it has no interest in entering Syria (either to fight the rebels or ISIS). I said that it would bellyache about ISIS and the strife to the south only to shore up a positive public image while it bombed the Kurds back to the stone age.

Turkey is happy for Russia to get involved with Syria. Russia will increasingly be a trade partner for Turkey, and Turkey doesn't want the West landing a foothold in Syria. There may have been a time the Erdogan had grand geopolitical ambitions, but the strife in Turkey for the past few years has sobered that. He wants to resolve the Kurd problem to secure Turkey's future (as he envisions it).
