I think Trump's biggest fear of a conflict would be the soaring oil prices. That in turn would hurt the economy and something he does NOT want going into 2020

If Iran thinks more strikes against non-US targets will reduce or eliminate the sanctions they are wrong; with each escalation comes more sanctions. However, I am not sure how much more can realistically be sanctioned that would have any affect.

Trump wants to negotiate a peaceful solution. I am all for that, but I don’t see that happening. So, what is left? More Iran escalations and more sanctions, until Iran crosses a red line. Attacking Saudi Arabia oil production assets does affect the world oil supply, which affects the world economy, and therefore, the US economy. However, Trump may see that as too remote for political support for military action. So, absent the unlikely event of a negotiated settlement, I think Trump is waiting for that escalation where other politicians and the people say enough is enough! I may be wrong, but that is my take on this.

I hate to lose people, but you gotta wait for them to attack US forces here.

Gantz says he should lead unity government, rejects coalition led by right
