Quoting: monica6269 "Construction crews moved 16 10,000-pound shipping containers into place Tuesday as part of an avant-garde apartment development project in Phoenix. "Containers on Grand will transform the 16 containers from the Port of Long Beach into eight urban apartments on Grand and 12th avenues near downtown Phoenix. "Brian Stark, a principal with Scottsdale-based architecture firm StarkJames, is developing the shipping container apartments on a former used car lot. "He said getting the containers into the place was the biggest challenge. He said construction will start on fashioning the containers into eight 740-square-foot, one-bedroom apartments. Developers are looking at monthly rents in the $1,000 range. "The project is one of the first shipping container housing developments in the U.S." [link to m.bizjournals.com] This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but with a whimper. |

WTF), there could be some very cool potentials with a dwelling like this. Imagine a transportation network for people who live in these. Have your house loaded onto specialized cargo-ship and sail around the world. |

The fact that they can be buried underground is perfect because then neighbors can not complain about neighborhood propetry depreciating because of ugliness... Surely you could buy your own container for a couple grand, and with maybe 10 or 20 grand more be able to convert it into a low cost sufficient housing unit. I would buy one in a heartbeat. It beats paying rent the rest of your life if you cannot afford a 100K+ home |

If you bury them deep enough, you could also probably build another modest home on top of them... leading to less urban sprall... |

It's been there for some years now. The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently. F. Anonymous Coward User ID: 59630342 United States 04/03/2015 12:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think i have read somewhere before that in America they dont want people to build container houses because they are very sturdy, and you can put a study steel door on them. The police complain that criminals can barricade themselves inside. They want houses made of wood so they can rip your door off and drag you out any time they deem fit. |

As long as they are buried underground, I dont see how they could pose any problem at all to the community as far as neatness or apperance is concerned. Truth is these shipping container homes have been around for a while and have become an avant-garde thing as well as popular with the small house/mortgage free movement. They've even become popular in being converted to small office and business structures. |

The containers are used for people that cause so much trouble for neighbourhoods that they even get kicked out of the social welfare homes (and we have an extremely socialist system as it is). They are used for the 0.01% of the most anti-social people! They are placed well outside regular neighbourhoods. Edit: and they are used for cheap student accomodations. I'm not sure about the Netherlands, but in America we can own property here, and there is much land that is not urban yet. I think it would be perfect to find an acre of land out in the suburbs or in the country and have one of these. It's kinda lke a log cabin, but it is much more reliable, stronger and it doesnt need constant repair. Repair is a big thing. I think that the government wants people to build out of wood instead of metal because wood deteriorates, and adds construction and home repair jobs to the economy... |

I will bury it underground, no one would even know it is a container. You enjoy your wood house that you have to constantly repair and keep up (I know, I am a carpenter). Enjoy your high cost of electricity , I will rent the land above my house so that my house will pay for itself, with basically no maintenance for a lifetime. |
