We've been putting people in containers for years, mostly the trash that don't adept to even the lowest form of civilization.

As long as they are buried underground, I dont see how they could pose any problem at all to the community as far as neatness or apperance is concerned.

Dont worry, your hollywood mansion in the hills is safe.

Not everyone needs 4000+ square feet of space. Just harder to clean and more expensive to air condition, not to mention more taxes paid to government.

Im not married and dont plan on having kids... would be perfect for me.

If i bury it underground, is that ok with you and your 'standards'?

creativity, efficiency and aesthetics do not equal a Hollywood mansion asswipe

Enjoy your lifeless box of a home
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 64700266

That is fine with me. I will bury it underground, no one would even know it is a container.

You enjoy your wood house that you have to constantly repair and keep up (I know, I am a carpenter).

Enjoy your high cost of electricity , I will rent the land above my house so that my house will pay for itself, with basically no maintenance for a lifetime.

They will need a lot if insulation in Phoenix though. Those metal walls will get awfully hot.
 Quoting: Ziconic

SuperTherm ceramic coatings can keep the walls within a few degrees of ambient air temperature.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 36877642

Insulation question is important. Foam on the outside might work but it doesn't weather without some sort of protective paint.

Do you have a link for that SuperTherm ceramic cover?

Viral marketing for the upcoming SnowCrash movie.
Page 379.

"She was afraid he would take her to some horrible place, but it turns out he rented a whole shipping container, stacked way up high on one of the containerships in the Core. The place is like a luxury hotel for big Core wheels.

She's trying to decide what to do with her legs, which are now dangling uselessly. She's not quite ready to wrap them around him, not this early in the date. Then she feels them spreading apart--way, way apart"

You would need some kind of gazebo and living space outside above yourhouse... and a job of course... cant stay underground like a vampire.

I jus think it is a good oppertunity for the ever growing poorer classes to experience home ownership.

The 'typical' American home in America costs at least 80-100K to build, and are not even as sturdy as this. As a carpenter, I believe that the economy is the reason why people are not starting to use more permanent materials in home building. Home maintenece is big business. Both taxes paid and the beaucracy surrounding it such as code inspectors, utilities, millions of small businesses (such as my own).

I am defensive because you were insulting me. No big deal, i dont dwell on that kind of stuff.

I made the comments I wanted to make in the thread. As a low-middle class income erson, maybe I can identify more with the low cost of the home. Of course someone with over $100K would not be interested in a cheap and cost effecting alternative housing.

Two 8 by 40s with about 24 foot between; erect pony walls on the inside walls of the containers and place 24 foot span truss rafters on the pony wall with rafter extensions to the outside plus soffit;

Now you have a 24 by 40 clear span between them - lots of space with low cost per square foot.

I've had the exterior of a shipping container coated with this for five years now, and it has performed excellently. I've found many other uses for it around the property as well.

Aside from the associated agenda-driven bullshit (and 1k a month!? WTF), there could be some very cool potentials with a dwelling like this.

Imagine a transportation network for people who live in these. Have your house loaded onto specialized cargo-ship and sail around the world.

Yes, except you will be sharing your house with 50 people and you will all be shackled. Sounds fun.

Interesting.

"Construction crews moved 16 10,000-pound shipping containers into place Tuesday as part of an avant-garde apartment development project in Phoenix.

"Containers on Grand will transform the 16 containers from the Port of Long Beach into eight urban apartments on Grand and 12th avenues near downtown Phoenix.

"Brian Stark, a principal with Scottsdale-based architecture firm StarkJames, is developing the shipping container apartments on a former used car lot.

"He said getting the containers into the place was the biggest challenge. He said construction will start on fashioning the containers into eight 740-square-foot, one-bedroom apartments. Developers are looking at monthly rents in the $1,000 range.

"The project is one of the first shipping container housing developments in the U.S."

You can actually just weld them all together into a single structure and then cut out the interior panels for large interior spans - no additional framing needed. Only the frame bears the load, not the walls, so they can be safely removed. You can then cantilever another set on of containers on top of those, giving you a covered entrance in front and a second floor balcony in the back.

Yea, I saw a youtube vid of a family that had 4 shipping containers connected at the corners in a square, with a small yard on the inside.

It was a totally secure compound complete with steel frame door, basically unpregnable, and in a SHTF scenario, it is easily defensible with being able to take up defensive positions in a 360 degree area around your home.

Not only do i think it is awesome, but I also think it is the future, whether we want it or not.

Prefabricate homes that are put together on site are gaining popularity... the only thing left is to find new cheaper ways to do it.

There are all kinds of new insulating materials that have come about in the past 20 or 30 years.

They can just spray some rubber, styrofoam type stuff a few inches deep all over it and then fiberglass over it for a protective barrier.

I'm just assuming about the fibroglass top, but you get the idea.

Shipping containers were designed keeping in mind the goods inside have to stay good in all kinds of climates.

Containers travel half the planet on a ship. Going from cold weather to hot weather. Dry and wet. And vice versa.

Now put the average American house (usually wooden) on top of a ship and let it travel half the planet. See what's left over of it when it arrives at the final destination.
