America -Then vs Now. It’s Almost Unbelievable | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 67023903 United States 04/08/2015 09:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Good read: Quoting: KoFFee_ [snip - less than 50%] Newsweek magazine, on December 27, 1982, in an article entitled, How the Bible Made America, made this revealing statement, “historians are discovering that the Bible, perhaps even more than the Constitution, is our Founding document.” To understand the core values of a nation, one must simply look to the beliefs set forth during its conception, and, in the case of America, during the transitional years of the American Revolution. Judge for yourself how far we have drifted from the original intent of early Americans. Consider the following: Then: If a proposed article for the Constitution was not supported by, or rooted in the Bible, it was not considered. In their early writings, many of the Founding Fathers quoted or referenced the Bible nearly four times more than any other source. Now: The Bible is mocked, ridiculed, and discarded. Then: First introduced in 1766, William Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Laws, served as the legal reference for the Founders, as well as for many early American lawyers. Blackstone’s commentaries were deeply rooted in biblical principles. It’s been said that Blackstone was the first to use the phrase, “the laws of nature and of nature’s God.” Now: “It is unconstitutional for students to see the Ten Commandments since they might read, meditate upon, respect, or obey them.” Stone v. Graham, 449 U.S. 39 (1980). Read the rest here: [link to www.oneplace.com] Unfortunately those who read this who already appose any type of biblical teachings, will just be more motivated to destroy our god given constitution... |

Thus while they desired a government based on Christian principles, they also wanted one free from religious entanglements. Clearly, they understood the concept of "grey area" in human affairs. Something neither the religious or the non-religious seem to see anymore. Last Edited by Avery Bullock on 04/08/2015 10:54 AM |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 59630342 United States 04/08/2015 10:12 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The Founders drew on the Bible and believed that Christianity was necessary for civil morality in a republican system. Quoting: The_Original_Mind It doesn't follow, however, that they believed Christianity should be imposed through law. The First Amendment is very clear - indeed, is even clearer in its first draft. Government shall make no laws respecting the establishment of religion. Yes, freedom of religion doesn't mean freedom from religion. No one is arguing that it means that. But it does mean that government will not impose religion through law, including through laws governing public school. Why is this important? For one reason, a reason that all Christians can accept, it prevents one sect of Christianity from gaining dominance over any others. It's easy for Christians to say that America should make laws based on the Bible against atheists or Muslims. But let's say we do: which Christianity do we use? Baptist? Unitarian? Catholic? "Nondenominational"? Calvinist? Lutheran? Should schools teach that Christ was a human, a god, or both man and God? Should schools teach pre-trib or post-trib? Etc. Now part of the confusion here arises from the fact that the Bible used to be taught in schools. But the schools in which it was taught were state-run schools. States weren't originally bound to the Constitution, and so if their state constitution permitting teaching the Bible, they could do so. But with the steady imposition of the federal constitution on the states, the first amendment has come to apply within the states. Furthermore, the federalization of schools and required the imposition of the first amendment on state schools. So while state schools could teach the bible previously, they find it increasingly hard to do so now. The answer is obvious: free up the education system, and then the freedom of atheists like myself is respected (my children won't be forced to learned Christianity at the point of government's gun), and Christians will be free to teach their children whatever brand of Christianity they prefer. Schools dont teach your kids Christianity, you damn liar. |

They mentioned God often in all their writings. They worked hard to assure the religious freedom for all American. The freedom of religion they wanted was to keep the government out of religion, not to keep religion out of government. They knew that a government without religion would be corrupt. Small minded people contend that one must either accept every word of the bible literally or discard it completely. Wiser men see it for what it is...the wisdom of the ages told in parable; mixed with legend, propaganda, and allegory from various times in our history, that provides a path for men to live side by side in relative peace. The Bible is probably the most important document in the Western world, and is in fact the underpinnings of our society whether one is able to accept that or not. Personally I don't believe in "God", but I do believe in the value of the 10 commandments and the basis of Judeo-Christian values and ethics. |
