A Polish man who was planning on living in Britain has confessed to raping and killing a nine-year-old girl after snatching her as she played with a friend in front of her mother.
The man 'appeared and grabbed the girl, named only as Chloe, forcing her to get into a red car' at about 3.30pm on Wednesday, prosecutors said in a statement today.
Her naked body was discovered in the woods just an hour-and-a-half later.
Her drunk killer, who had raped and strangled her, was found a short while afterwards.
The man admitted his crime later the same evening - revealing he had been heading for England, where his sister lived.
Shockingly, he had already been banned from France after being released from prison where he had served time for robbery, and was handed over to Polish authorities in March 2014 after a Europe-wide arrest warrant was issued in his name.
Prosecutors said the man, who has not been named, had only arrived back in the country that morning.
Jean-Pierre Valensi told a press conference held on Thursday that forensic investigators reported evidence of 'strangulation and sexual violence'.
Chloe was playing with a friend on Wednesday afternoon, watched by her friend's step-father, when a man 'appeared and grabbed her, forcing her to get into a red car', prosecutors said in a statement.
