Beyond their "official" duties, they were also embraced as mascots and pets by the soldiers and sailors with whom they served.

Heh, I was more surprised to see a Canadian soldier than I was to see the military cat. But most cats were Navy cats, because they liked having them aboard to catch any rats that would get in the food. |
