"This is the second year HJR112, sponsored by Rep. Ken Johnson (R-Moulton) and cosponsored by 52 additional Republicans, has been approved by the House. Last year the resolution died in the Senate, but Rep. Johnson has high hopes that this year will be the year Alabama officially signs on to the idea of a Article V convention."

The thing you don't get is that it's not a left/right issue. It's an issue of the federal gov. not following or enforcing laws based on the constitution. The reason this has boiled over to such a large degree is mainly due to the millions of people like yourself that believe these calls for change are partisan. It prevents any action from taking place. Grow a brian moran.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7612889

Seems pretty partisan when only one side is rallying...

Just sayin.

Both sides want change, and they want shit to stay the same it all depends on what and when.

Without getting into any Liberal vs. Conservative crap...anyone else think its ironic that its always the states who take most from the federal government who complain most about the federal government?

Alabama would have a standard of living similar to Albania in the early 90s if it wasn't for the federal government taking taxes from the prosperious states, and redistributing that wealth.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69081325

The majority of money that comes into Alabama from the Fed is for military funding. The people of the state don't see a dime of that money, because we have a large amount of military bases, NASA, and a port. If you take out the military funding, Alabama takes far less than most states.
 Quoting: Zedakah

Excellent point. However, those are jobs that are created by the federal govt. I think a third of Alabama's revenue comes from the fed. govt, and a larger percentage of Albama's population is on the federal dole, when compared to the national average (much of that is subsidized by the fed. govt as well).

I'm not trying to disparage the people of 'Bama, but, I still think it's ridiculous for the govt of the state to want to reign in the federal govt, because they would be in a world of hurt if that happened.

Re: Alabama House calls for Convention of States to rein in federal government
No American should want a constitutional convention!!!!!!!!

First, they already do not follow what we have. What makes anyone think adding on will make them follow the constitution?

Secondly, they can say whatever the hell they want to get people to support this move, and when (IF) it happens, they don't have to do what they said and will blame any bad outcome on "the other side"...of which there is not. At the top, they all work for the same people pulling Obamas strings.

Thirdly, they could take away whatever they want. Just like they repealed prohibition. They could get in there and repeal the first, SECOND, third, etc.

And with that UN small arms treaty signed, I will guarantee that is on the list.

Please educate others and do not fall for their lies. We should consider a con-con, when, and only when, they start following what is already laid out.

I know Im all over the place. Its late here, and I have to go to work in 5 hrs (trying to keep myself awake).

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69081325

There is a lot more to the state than the aid numbers report. We have been busing in large businesses here because we are a right to work state. We are number 2 in auto manufacturing, and we are getting more businesses by the year from the North (Remington, and other gun companies). Most of these jobs are for the uneducated workers here. We still don't have enough, but it is much better than before.

I will say that we are getting these businesses solely due to liberal policies affecting the other states. Those businesses can't keep up with union costs and state taxes, so they move down here (thankfully instead of out of country). Our low property taxes and corporate taxes help these businesses a lot (although we do have a high state sales tax).

We also have a very high educated work force as well. We are top 5 in sports medicine, very high in regular medicine, as well as STEM jobs (thanks to NASA and universities, and Alabama Power). What we are really hurting in is with the middle class and privately owned businesses. The federal regulations have decimated private business, and they are closing up fast. My sister owns a restaurant, and she can barely break even due to taxes. Every year there are more taxes on small businesses from the federal government, and there is hardly any increase in revenue. If anyone of those new (or old) taxes is unpaid, there is a $200,000 fine that would bankrupt most people. This is why under Obama more small businesses are failing than starting up (net loss) for the first time since Carter I believe (Maybe Reagan's early years).

The reason why this movement is surging is because corporations are flooding to the state and helping out despite all the government overreach destroying small businesses. People are seeing the increase in local communities due to the large corporations, and then they see the communities that take in federal aid (high crime, no economy). It's a night and day difference between the free market and federal regulations.

All of that said, there is a huge problem that goes completely unseen by people who do not live here. It is essentially the black vs. white problem and mentality. Most of the inner cities are 70%+ african american and vote completely for democrats. They do not like white people or white businesses.

Take Birmingham City Council for example. They refused offers from Red Diamond and Bass Pro Shops to set up shop in Birmingham City Limits citing racism. Those businesses went to Leeds and Moody (redneck towns 20 years ago). Now those two 'redneck' towns are booming. They have outlet malls, hotels, businesses, manufacturing and lots of jobs. Birmingham is continually bankrupt and raising sewer bills yet again (because they lost a lot of money in wall street through poorly investing the sewer funds). They have a long history of corrupt black politicians (some of which are still in jail), yet they keep voting in black democrats.

Thus, the white, republican areas are doing well and the inner city black democratic areas are struggling. So....those inner city areas ask for federal money, and they receive lots of federal money. They have new schools built in areas that are 95% black, but the graduation rate remains very low. They take lots of federal money and give nothing back. This is the real reason for those numbers.

It's not necessarily a black issue, but more of a black entitlement and black corruption issue within those cities. If they just learned to take local white peoples' money then they wouldn't have to take federal money. Here's an article that documents a rural black town that would rather drive 100+ miles round trip than to shop at local white stores. This is the attitude that is destroying the state (as well as the black communities).

Alabama is a shithole. Home of the only in-ground hazardous waste landfill in America. It's the nation's dump. Everything is rusted and busted. Sure, you got a PF Chang's over in Vestavia, but that about it, yo. Total shithole.

The ONLY reason to stop in Alabama is the Fish Market Restaurant in B'ham.

Valid point, truth is to much of this country is a shot hole, and we should be pissed of instead throwing stones,I for one would tell the people that turned this place into a third world hell hole to get the fuck out ,if I had a few friends we would put them the fuck out

... Just a lil backstory so's you know my opinion is informed, I was once in charge of a remediation of a EPA superfund site outside of Birmingham. Before replacing the dirty soil, we had to test the replacement soil. I literally could not find ANY soil for sale that passed basic hazardous waste testing anywhere in Alabama.

And you have the world's longest constitution. Why?

Stopping the federal government will never happen at the federal level. It can only happen at the state level, and more states need to join us. Although, there still is a lot of corruption at the state level here.

A ConCon is a bad idea.

Not cuz of the concerns already posted that our rights could be easily taken away with a worse constitution... and that could happen.

The problem is, if we have a ConCon, then it will lead to civil war and millions dead. See, the Constitution has been in a coma since 1871. There are a lot of people who don't know that.

If the lack of a constitution is known, that could lead to war.

I don't like our gov., but before you wish for a civil war, you better know that millions will die, probably 10s of millions. Not just from the fighting, but the collapse of infrastructure. No clean water will crush this country.

the problem is this-

How can you strictly limit an article V convention?

As stated-
The resolution passed today by the Alabama House strictly limits the purpose of the proposed convention to three areas:

1) imposing fiscal restraints on the federal government through a balanced budget amendment;
2) limiting the power and jurisdiction of the federal government; and
3) implementing term limits on federal elected officials.

Every single right in the Bill of Rights and every other right is in peril if the various communists/progressives/socialists/rinos/neo cons get what they want.
 Quoting: s. d. butler

All good points, but Term Limits will only benefit the people when the Lobbyists and special interest groups are kicked out of Washington DC. Many are ex Congressmen and Senators that know the ins and outs of the Political process. New Elected Officials that come in are tainted by these people, who take them under their wing and show them corruption...

I work at cottage farms plant nursery, and there are literally only 6 whites out of over 150 people working day and night shift, two being my little brother and myself. Alabama is a shithole. Home of the only in-ground hazardous waste landfill in America. It's the nation's dump. Everything is rusted and busted. Sure, you got a PF Chang's over in Vestavia, but that about it, yo. Total shithole.

The ONLY reason to stop in Alabama is the Fish Market Restaurant in B'ham.

Why?

Re: Alabama House calls for Convention of States to rein in federal government
*****

I think its a great idea, just a lil early.

The Libs and Progressives are not nearly whipped enough.

When they are bleeding from every orifice, and beg to go home to Mother Russia, then push them off the cliff and tell the to swim for their lives.

After that enema, rebuilding the da,mage should be a piece of cake. Just imagine: No more FED, no more Dept. of Edumacation, flat tax, rebuild manufacturing base, rebuild America.

I'll fight for that.

If you couldn't find clean soil then you're an idiot and should have been fired...maybe you were and that's why you're bitter towards our fine state.

Airbus is moving their facilities here and Hyundai is about as Alabama as boiled peanuts. Huge manufacturers do business here for a reason - we have a trained, competent workforce that values hard work and appreciates the opportunity.

The majority of money that comes into Alabama from the Fed is for military funding. The people of the state don't see a dime of that money, because we have a large amount of military bases, NASA, and a port. If you take out the military funding, Alabama takes far less than most states.

Re: Alabama House calls for Convention of States to rein in federal government
If they want to reign in the federal government they need to restore the rule of law.

The most effective way to restore the rule of law would be a constitutional amendment to permit any state attorney general to bring a prosecution for any federal wrong doing.

The problem we have is that the AGs like Eric Holder won't prosecute people in their administration who are committing crimes. To say that the executive branch of the federal government is wildly out of control is an understatement.

Under such an amendment, any state prosecutor should be authorized to bring and investigation and prosecution for any federal or state crime. Since each state is a sovereign, each state should be enabled to bring their own prosecutions. Then we would have 50 chances to get it right and we would have 50 states looking over the federal governments shoulder.

Second Part of amendment would be a prohibition on presidential pardons when a state AG brings an investigation, prosecution and gets a conviction.

I suspect with that amendment, the federal government would fall in line really fast, this would give the phrase "rule of law" some real teeth and we won't have fast and furious or Lois Lerners or Hillary Clintons running around flaunting the law even if the president himself orders it.

EDIT
and the third part of the amendment should be that the highest court of appeal for a conviction under this amendment would be the highest state court where the prosecution is brought and not the US supreme court.

I applaud the 'Bama congress critters spirit but if you can't get the sentiment to take root among the house and senate members in DC it is a mere token effort and a pointless exercise.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69080936

ehhhhh.. what if 5 or 6 or 20 state congresses are saying this? It becomes 'a thing' and enters public opinion. Eventually, won't the DC congress folks have to give it a second look?

This is cool, just wondering if those who want it are prepared for what the outcome may actually be. You go into a constitutional convention hoping to restore the original, and you come out with one that codifies the current state of the nation....or worse.
