I used to be a Property Manager in California. There is a law on the books which denotes, "normal wear and tear", after a year of residency. A lot of people are not aware of this law which is prevalent in most states.
It is at the expense of the owner to repaint after a year. If you had permission from management to paint another color it would still fall on the owner to repaint to their liking, after residency for a year or more.
This sounds like a small claims court case to me if they force you to repaint. Keep all receipts and record time spent. You will be glad you did.

Wear and Tear, landlord responsible for repainting every year, which they don't, but that means you don't have to if you've stayed a while. Carpets and lino, 4 years or so, as well. Wear and Tear is important. Along with photos of the place when you move in.
