For those of you who are not science savvy, an alpha particle consists of 2 neutrons, and 2 protons, hence why a sheet of paper can stop them, really that's not what you should be worried about.
Next we have Beta particles which are electrons being emitted from the atom or particle.
Finally we have the most dangerous type of radiation which is gamma, these are not particles, rather just energy this is what makes them so dangerous, they can penetrate nearly anything and are high energy photons, hence why they are called Gamma Rays, not particles.
This is whats known as ionizing radiation, weather it be a (cat-,an-)ion, depends. This damages the DNA in your cell, the four bases of DNA are ATCG. When these are damaged, the way your DNA is read changes, and can result in cancer. [ link to www.youtube.com (secure)]
