Using the 3-laws logic, it fails dramatically. The first law is allowing no harm to come to a human. Drowning them certainly constitutes harm. Growing beyond its programming is another matter. In which case the 3 Laws have no relevance - much like a person raised in a cult setting disregards the rules programed in upon breaking the conditioning.
