Mental health has more space for moral grey areas than judeo christain religion.
I do believe in god, but you definitely do not need to believe in god to be a good person who values altruism.
I know many kind atheists.

Divine punishment is a false narrative when you realize you have done it to yourself. G-d didn't force anyone to do anything against their own will! lol Whether or not kindness costs you anything has nothing to do with God. And yes it is pertinent to divine punishment or divine reward. You want God to like you and that’s why some people are kind.
