Morning. Today is the first day of my internship. I go upstairs to start in 40 minutes. I'm wickedly nervous and not sure why. I think after the first day and I know what to expect and such it won't be so bad.

I think it would be abnormal if you weren't nervous. Chewing gum helps. Tricks the brain into thinking you're eating which will relax you by default.

The 90's were such a happy time.

You're right, I guess anybody would be nervous for their first day at a job. It'll likely just be getting me acclimated I suppose. I don't think I can screw up too royally my first day. Lol.

There is a lot to look at and reminence, in those memes.

I turned 13 in 1990, so for me it was 80s nostalgia. Super Nintendo was released in 1991. Hard to believe. :)

We definitely lost something as a culture, when all the video stores closed and we were left with whatever we had in our library..and streaming options.

I worked in a video store for 25 years. Here’s what I learned as my industry died.

The independent video store where I've worked for 15 years is finally dead. After 28 years in business, we succumbed to the "disruption" of Netflix and Hulu, bled to death by the long, slow defection of our customer base. Once we announced our closing, the few who remained mourned — then we locked the doors. Our permanent collection is gone: boxed up and shipped off to the local library.

Videoport, of Portland, Maine, lasted longer than most. It was better than most. It owed its longevity to a single, engaged owner, to strong ties to the local film scene and a collection that put others to shame. I was proud to work there, alongside a staff that paired film knowledge and exceptional customer service skills like few other places I've known. We were a fixture in town, until we weren't.

It hasn't been so long since independent rental joints had the opposite problem. Before Videoport, I spent 10 years working at Matt & Dave's Video Venture. In retrospect, it's hard to believe that our downfall came at the hands of a buyout by a major rental chain. Suspiciously well-dressed guys with clipboards started dropping in; soon enough, we were gone, one of the estimated 30,000 video stores in America gobbled up by Blockbuster or Movie Gallery or Hollywood Video, each eager to dominate the booming VHS rental racket. If only those chains knew that within a decade, they'd be goners too.

I spent 25 years of my life in an industry that no longer exists. Maybe I'm not the most ambitious guy. But that time has provided me with an up-close look at not just how the industry is changing but how people's tastes, and the culture those tastes create, have changed with it.

I remember when WOW first came out..it was totally amazing. I lost months to that game and don't regret one minute.

I remember when AIDS stormed on to the world scene and took over the media. Ryan White. For those unfortunate enough to enter puberty during those impressionable years..

Cottage cheese is a great protein-packed replacement for sour cream.

Baked potato with butter and cottage cheese is amazing. Might just be the perfect food.

Do you remember when we played WoW together? Good times.

I worked at blockbuster for 3 years. I absolutely loved it. Closed five stores and eventually the company itself. But I had a great time there.

I do remember. It was good times. I felt a bit intimidated being I always solo'd in WOW and you were a far better player than I was. On both hands I could count the number of times I partied with others, my entire time there.

It made dungeons impossible without, but I sometimes just skipped them. Wasn't part of the fun for me although I did miss the loot. lol.


I know you did. I was hoping remembering your time there, would remind you that work can be both fun and life confirming.. if you find the right niche.

The death of Robert F Kennedy's 22-year-old granddaughter Saoirse Kennedy Hill was caused by an accidental overdose.

A death certificate released on Friday revealed that Saoirse was found unresponsive at the Kennedy Compound back on August 1 due to a fatal mixture of prescription medications, methadone and alcohol.

Among the prescription drugs found in her system were diazepam and nordiazepam (first marketed as Valium), fluoxetine (Prozac) and norfluoxetine (the anti-depressant Luoxetine).
