Bitter Lake - Adam Curtis ~ The seed for Al-Qaeda and IS was planted in a meeting between Roosevelt and ibn Saud + Graveyard of Empires
Adam Curtis makes challenging and unconventional documentaries. His latest, called Bitter Lake seeks to make sense of the of the situation we are in. He explains the rise of the Mujahidin, Taliban, Al-Qaeda and Islamic State in terms of the Saudi government's worried response to growing militancy within their nation, literally as an attempt to export their radicals to fight abroad.

He documents the source of the radical fervour in a deal struck between Roosevelt and Abdulaziz ibn Saud during the closing stages of WWII that guaranteed the US access to Saudi oil in return for military protection and the freedom to pursue their fundamentalist Wahhabist beliefs.

Curtis' documentary focuses on Afghanistan and how a simplification of global politics into good and evil by Reagan and subsequent politicians lead to disastrous mistakes being made in Afghanistan. He also looks at how the 1973 Yom Kippur War and following oil crisis lead to the creation of the petrodollar economy and ultimately to out of control banks causing the financial crisis.

If you are in the UK, or can watch Iplayer you can see Bitter Lake here

For everyone else it's here in three parts.

Bitter lake: part 1

Bitter lake: part 2

Bitter lake: part 3

If you have never seen an Adam Curtis film before you should know that he makes extensive use of music and a collage of archive clips but don't be fooled by first impressions he is a serious and thought provoking documentarist. Here is a taste of his eclectic style. Some scenes of violence, death and injury.

Here is a shorter version of "Come down to us" by Burial from his Rival Dealer EP that introduces Curtis' film.

Here is one version of the soundtrack playlist to Bitter lake including more music from Burial, NIN as well as Cliff Martinez - music from Solaris and Clint Mansell from Moon, so a bit a Sci-Fi connection there. Solaris is referenced in Curtis' documentary as he leaves us living in an unreal reality.

Playlists don't seem to embed so here is just one track from it. Clint Mansell,We're Not Programs, Gerty, We're People from the original soundtrack to Moon.

Here is Curtis' blog previewing his film:

"Politicians used to have the confidence to tell us stories that made sense of the chaos of world events.

But now there are no big stories and politicians react randomly to every new crisis - leaving us bewildered and disorientated.

And journalism - that used to tell a grand, unfurling narrative - now also just relays disjointed and often wildly contradictory fragments of information.

Events come and go like waves of a fever. We - and the journalists - live in a state of continual delirium, constantly waiting for the next news event to loom out of the fog - and then disappear again, unexplained."

well I know I have seen links to Richard D Hall material on glp (and not by me) so he has followers on here. I've watched some. and i like what I see.
If you are a fan of his, then you have a few people on here interested in Richard's material.

I have to weed through a lot to get to the interesting bits, but when I find them, these are the most powerful on the internet.

ok, now I will watch a few of your videos..

Thanks, I am watching one of Richard D Hall's videos now, he has a huge range of topics! Adam Curtis' favourite topic is about how politicians, motivated by a new dogma, attempt to exercise power and control people through the psychology of population. Their plans usually go wrong or have unintended side effects.

Wow. This doc is eye opening and has a lot in it that for people who understand the situation we are in can easily foresee what is in store for the US and probably other western countries not long after the Republic's official obit is published.

I get a little sad when i hear Canadians, Australians, British trash America when they don't realize once America is gone and her unique constitution that has inspired how most other western countries treat their citizens they will turn quickly despotic.

It's the US constitution that validates and reconfirms our G-d given natural rights. Rights we are BORN with.

No other gov't does this. No other gov't would ever do this.

Laugh at America now. We've thrown it all away but you too will suffer when we are gone.

Glad you liked it, try the "Century of the Self" that's another eye opener. The youtube you posted is missing an hour of film, I wonder what has been left out, apart from the "atmospheric" footage.

Roosevelt was blackmailed. By whom? Fifth columnists.

We don't need "big stories"--propaganda.

We need for your group to stop stop fomenting war.

Are you sure you didn't take inspiration from an earlier bill of rights? Habeas Corpus, no taxation without representation, freedom of speech, no standing army, the right to bear arms, free election of representatives, it all sounds familiar somehow.

Got schooled last night watching this. ISIS was more or less started years ago under a different guise but who put them there is (according to the flic,) quite shocking. Reaffirming what others have said all along.

It is shocking. It's shocking that in return for being our biggest arms market and as part of the al-Yamamah "understanding" [link to en.wikipedia.org] that Saudi Arabia is allowed to be the biggest provider of literature and learning materials into British mosques and Islamic faith schools. It brainwashes British born Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, who have no cultural or historic link to Saudi Wahhabism, that Islam is Wahhabism, the Islamic version of a 1930s facism.
[link to www.independent.co.uk]

When they have swallowed that they are all ready to join the jihad, not that the Saudis tolerate them in their own country, strictly for export only. [link to www.newstatesman.com]

Near the end of the documentary from about 17:20 on you can see how the Saudis dealt with with Wahhabist Jihadis inside Saudi Arabia. They have sown the wind.
