Why do so many patients have rib injuries?

"Cushing says the patients at the hospital are between 19 and 80 years old and have severe rib injuries. He says some may remain hospitalized for several days."

"4:15 p.m. A doctor says he was surprised to find out that nearly all the Amtrak crash victims treated at his Philadelphia hospital had rib fractures."

Early, early report was the train may have it a CSX engine; there is an active Conrail yard here.

I actually live around a mile from the accident; the Corridor runs behind my house. My wife heard the train sound a series of short blasts from it's horn, before hearing what sounded like dynamite to her,along with rumblings.

My boss begged me to put a contract together for him last minute...but job security is important, even at such a late hour.

It's now after 2 a.m. My brain needs a rest.

Boy! Lots of great "connecting-the-dots" on this thread.

I hadn't even put it together that if the train was actually supposed to derail and plow into all those tankers in the train yard, what kind of damage they would have been looking at rather than just what was seen with the present circumstances. What all was in that train yard in front of
the trajectory of that train besides the tankers, anything?
Just wondered. A google earth of that area would be very
telling. Anyone have that program?
Just wondering.

a famous derailment in spain has the engine clearing the turn then the 3rd car down 'bounces' inexplicably....only then does the whole train derail...

I think that third car had help

The day picture seems to have a good deal of information hidden in it.


It's my hope that some of the people commenting will look at that picture, and try to visualize how that car alone became mangled.

We can see that the engine landed on it's own, after hitting the tracks on the other rail lines.

The answers to what happened to the second car may be all the way down the tracks past the last car.

In a derailed train traveling at momentum, how does one car pop off?

Could it have been crushed by the engine and third car, then pop off?

We really need to diagnose this event by attempting to rule out what's implausible, against what is plausible.

Have you ever had a toy train? Mine would always derail and most of the time the engine stayed on the rails. The engine is the heaviest part of the train, so harder to derail.

Then you have the whole whip lash thing happening with the other cars. The 1st car is only going to derail from the back side first as it's too close to the more stable engine at the front.

The 2nd car is the first part of the train that would derail from the front, yanking all the cars behind with it and pulling the first car from it's back. With the forward momentum of all the cars and the angles, the 1st train car would be the most smooshed up one as it would get the full velocity of the 3rd car and beyond.

Makes sense to me. BTW, I hear on the radio Thursday afternoon, that the Philly mayor, Nutter stated that the engine rolled over several times. I don't think that happened at all.

I encounter the same phenomenon, especially with the senior citizen crowd You see, they grew up in an era where the Media was largely trustworthy - the WWII and 1950's era. Many of these now senior citizens don't even know what the Internet is, let alone how to use a personal computer. They are stuck with the State run propaganda - ABC, NBC and CBS - for their information, outlets that at one time were trustworthy but sold out over time.

We're also vastly more knowledgeable and tend to properly investigate. Unlike those similar to you, we don't just assume Google and YouTube are the font of everything. Yes, we can use the Internet.
