Anyone on Here Familiar With Small Engine/Lawn Mower Repair?
I have a cub commercial zero radius turn mower with 18 hp Kawasaki engine.

Having power surges and stalling. Sometimes I have to use full choke to keep the engine running.

Have changed air and gas filters and cleaned with mechanic in a can type stuff. Changed oil, etc.

Any ideas? The fact I have to run full choke suggests not enough gas I assume. I also notice fuel filter is sometimes full and sometimes looks like there is only a little fuel.

Intermittant fuel pump perhaps.

Unit is 12 years old

I hired a Mexican. Much less hassle, and I'm on the right side of history. Very satisfying.

I would do that and get the appropriate gaskets/kit. Look up your model number to make sure you get it right. Air leaking past the fuel bowl gasket can do the same thing.

Ethanol isn't a small engines friend. Seafoam is good and there always "Start your engines", but that's pretty expensive. About 8 bucks a pop up here

yeah I added something which was supposed to clean carb jets dealer recommended. Run through engine and let sit 4 hours.

Didnt do squat.

Ill check the spark plug but it was put in new last fall. Had only a few hours on the engine.

I dont want to hire a mexican to do my work.

I would say clogged injecter on the carburetor.Having to run in full choke suggests its needing that extra force to get past the clog.Remove carb and clean it.Get new gaskets and check for cracks in motor where you can be losing compression.

its called a cub commercial 18 hp with a 48" deck.

Probably the entry level model?

Pretty good for my 2 acre lawn. Has been doing great until this glitch.

Yeah, I agree its probably the carb...was hoping not. I think the carb project will kill a day the way it looks

Re: Anyone on Here Familiar With Small Engine/Lawn Mower Repair?
small engines run hot especially with ethanol, so your spark plug may have heat damage and be cracked, i always used to put a small cap of oil into the gas 'petrol' of my 2 stroke, it lengthens the lifespan

get some that additive from the Home Depot for your small engine's gas. Spark plug is good too. You could even have a small air leak at the primer bulb (if yours has it). Ethanol also rots out gaskets.

A quick way to find out of it's a spark plug problem is squirt a little engine start fluid in the intake and see if it's fires. If it does more than likely it's a fuel problem

Re: Anyone on Here Familiar With Small Engine/Lawn Mower Repair?
what does the fuel smell like? you could have a clogged main jet in carb if it smells bad/has had bad fuel run through it.

smell the fuel, or drain it, pop off carb, fuel bowl, and have a look at jets/plumb it clean with a nice, small round file

then reassemble

Look for a bolt on the bottom of the carb bowl. Remove it and clean out the holes on the brass fitting. Reassemble.

Might have. The unit had 1/4 tank of gas over the winter. Forgot to drain it.

Added some gas stabilizer and filled balance with fresh gas. Figured that would be ok.
