Great point. The Empire was religiously diverse and tolerant until the Emperor began enforcing Christianity. The two obvious exceptions to this tolerance were the Celtic druidic religions and Christianity, both of which were persecuted heavily. Religious factionalism became one of the central factors in the collapse during the 5th century. If the pagans hadn't persecuted Christianity, I imagine the Empire wouldn't have had to worry much at the imperial level about religious instability. It became a problem when the Emperor began taking a side in the theological debates, which had already caused violence in the streets in the Eastern cities, but which had been up to then local issues.

Its really interesting to see how is everything connected. Eg, the role of Christianity in the Empire's growth and decline, one pro i can image, when you dont have enough money to pay your soldiers to fight the barbarians, you make them feel they fight for their religion (eg. the crusades) and you give them a way to gain their place in Paradise (not mentioning the looting of all the wealthy places they go to), while at the same time you give a lot of men the opportunity to skip the army by becoming monks (we have an explosion of the monastery life in europe) and at the same time, the monasteries become the main institutes that preserve the culture(s). Yup. Religion also became a great way to tie the barbarians to the Empire.
