Cheap, Safer, OTC Alternative to Prozac: Generic Benadryl | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 85581 United States 09/08/2006 03:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | YES! When people "taper off" from heavy anti-depressants the severe side effects are most effectively combatted by either small doses of Prozac or ..drum roll.. Benadryl. They are essentially the same, in fact most report better results with Benadryl. |

For example, an antihistamine like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) might mimic an antidepressant with sedative and anticholinergic properties. Caffeine might mimic a stimulating antidepressant such as fluoxetine (Prozac). |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 141151A non-drowsy formula for Benadryl? Does one exist? I've never seen it. It can't work as an antidepressant unless it contains diphenhydramine, according to the article: [link to www.hedweb.com] |

I do wonder if you could take St. John's Wort during the day, and then the generic Benadryl at night. One thing about the St. John's Wort though. If you are on birth controll pills, it can cause them to break down quicker than normal, which might allow an egg to be released. I guess it is not good to use if you are avoiding pregnancy. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 141331 Switzerland 09/09/2006 02:05 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Clinical evaluation of diphenhydramine hydrochloride for the treatment of insomnia in psychiatric patients: a double-blind study. Kudo Y, Kurihara M. Institute of Clinical Pharmacology, Aino Hospital, Osaka, Japan. The usefulness of the antihistaminic agent diphenhydramine hydrochloride was evaluated using a double-blind procedure at sleeping doses of 12.5, 25, and 50 mg in 144 psychiatric patients with insomnia. The general condition of the patients with insomnia was at least "slightly improved" in 62.5% (12.5-mg group), 60% (25-mg group), and 67.4% (50-mg group) after treatment with the test drug for 2 weeks. Side effects were observed in a total of 11 patients (7.6%) but were not severe. No symptoms suggestive of drug dependence were evident. Diphenhydramine hydrochloride thus appears to be effective in the treatment of insomnia, but the appropriate dosage will depend on previous medical treatment of insomnia. Anonymous Coward User ID: 62021 United States 09/09/2006 02:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes, anti-histamines are the basic approach behind many sedative, tranquilizers and anti-depressants. Look fpr the benadryl to go the way of the cold medicines now behind the pharmacy counter but for a different reason. When too many people find out how they can possibly self-medicate and with probably a lot less side effects and possibly cheaper than prescription, the easy availability of anti-histamines will cease. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 141323 United States 09/09/2006 02:12 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | this is kinda true, kinda bullshit diphenhydramine has a lot different profile than prozac it has a lot more affinity for histamine and has more for anticholinergic activity its the number one non-gaba related sleeping pill Diphenhydramine is officaily indicated for 3 purposes 1) Allergy (Benedryl, Waldryl, etc) 2) insomnia (Tylenol PM, Unisom, Nytol) 3) motion sickness (largely replaced by dramamnine, which is a diphenhydramine melocue attached to another molecue so its the same fucking thing) |

nobody User ID: 71181 United States 09/09/2006 07:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | they use benadryl for chemo patients Quoting: Anonymous Coward 125023iv even few side effects, very clean i guess i always liked actifed for allergies once you get past the drowsiness I did chemo last January thru April and was told to take Claritin because it would help with any allergic reactions to the carboplatin and taxol treatment I was given. They would even administer claritin by IV before the other chemo meds. Usually about 30 minutes in the claritin would knock me out. Which was a good thing since the whole session usually lasted about 6-7 hours. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 121529 United States 09/10/2006 10:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I tried benadryl last night. Yeah, it really gave me a good night's sleep. I don't know if it was the good night's sleep or the medicine, but I feel good today. So I need to get some Saint Johns. Can I get it at walmart? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 141566Yes, You should be able to get it at Wal-Mart. I have gotten it there before. One more thing about St, John's Wort, It can make you more sun sensitive. Be sure to use sunscreen if you are going to be out for any length of time. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 141637^ this fuckin idiot SKIMMED... skimmed 1 or 2 strange ackward tin foil webpages and he thinks prozac is not safe. god damn the people are are like hillbillies and hicks with mental retardation prozac has no harmful effects - its just that it is an ineffective antidepressant that ends up making people feel worse. benedryl wont help you either, by the way. |
Yes it's close to Prozac. User ID: 140499 United States 09/10/2006 11:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | but, they both have been linked to heart problems and tachardia... Maybe because they were orignially cogeners made from an insecticide used to kill helminths - a parasite of cattle. People shouldn't supress histamines, because histamines have some sort of action to protect against cancer, hence people who have problems with high histamine levels in the blood, are much less likely to cause cancer... The other alternative to anti histamines is to get essential fatty acids, from evening primrose oil, flax seed etc, or grass fed beef... |
