Pilot Has Blurred Vision After 11 Planes Are Struck by Lasers Near Newark Airport
Eleven commercial flights reported lasers illuminated their aircraft Wednesday night as they flew over New Jersey between the hours of 9 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., and the pilot of one plane reported having blurred vision, according to federal officials.

“This is an assault on a pilot as far as I’m concerned,” said Rich Frankel, special agent in charge of the Newark, New Jersey, office of the FBI. “It is a criminal matter. You’re putting the lives of not just the pilot but everyone on the plane at risk.”

Several of the incidents were reported approximately 15 to 20 miles southwest of Newark Liberty International Airport, and the planes were bound for that airport, as well as LaGuardia Airport in New York City, and Pittsburgh, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

"Just for your information, there’s someone shooting a laser about four or five miles back off our back wing,” one pilot told the Newark airport control tower.
“That just happened again?” the tower responded.

“Yes, about four to five miles back," the pilot answered. "They lit us up pretty well.”

It happened later to another flight from Charlotte, North Carolina.

“American 1976 checking in with you, and we just got the laser also, here at 3,000 [feet],” the pilot said.

Investigators do not yet know where the laser or lasers originated, the FBI's Frankel told ABC News.

"Its difficult, again, just because of where the plane is, that the plane is moving at a certain speed, that it's a fixed location on the ground," Frankel said. "The pilot may not know that area of New Jersey and, therefore, it’s even harder to identify."

The New Jersey State Police said in a statement that the agency was notified of the incidents by the FAA and would be assisting the investigation.

I almost can't believe lasers on the ground can get 3000 feet high. Too many are molecules.

And even if it did get so high, the beam would hit the plane just for a nanosecond or so.

Besides that, how can it shine INTO a cockpit, when the beam is originating from the ground? Since when do planes have the cockpit on the bottom of the plane?

I think it has to be something else.

The airport should have drones standing by so they can go and pinpoint where the laser is coming from. Send the drone right down to the person and take a picture of him.

It's all about being in the right place. You'll have to position yourself so that you can point your laser directly at the cockpit of the plane when it's on its final approach. So, the total distance is much more than 3000 ft. A simple laser pointer won't do for two reasons. Firstly, you need some sort of aiming optics to keep up with the plane. Being on the approach line helps a lot (just adjust the elevation of the beam), but you'll still have to be able to aim the beam. Secondly, a laser pointer is not powerful enough. However, there are civilian lasers that are more than capable of blinding a human being at that distance. They're more bulky than a laser pointer, but even with the power source, they're still smaller than a rifle, for instance.

We had an incident like that recently where I live.

I don't know how they did it, but the police were somehow able to pinpoint where the laser was sent from. It turned out to be some young woman. She was arrested and is probably soon on her way to jail.

With industrial grade lasers you don't need to hit the eye. I work with Class 4 lasers. Even reflections of the laser light can cause irreparable damage to your unprotected retina. Getting temporarily blinded or your vision blurred by such a reflection is even easier.

With a Class 4 laser, all you need to do is to hit the window and the reflections will cause blurred vision or temporary blindness. And yes, Class 4 (or even 3B) will have enough power to do that at a distance of 3000 ft and more.

While fully automatic landings are technically possible at some airports (the safety regs require that a shitload of very specific instrumentation is installed and operational at the landing site), they are not allowed if the pilots aren't in a condition to take over the landing at any time. A pilot with a blurred vision does not qualify for such a landing.

Good point, how could pilots possibly see anything on the ground? Pilots obviously can't see anything below the horizon. They can only see the sky. That's just how cockpits are designed. It would be dangerous for a pilot to see anything on the ground, which is why cockpits are designed such that pilots cannot ever see the ground. After all, they might panic upon realizing how high up in the sky they are. Or when landing, they might trust their questionable human intuition rather than the infallible high-tech instruments in the cockpit.

Yes, thank goodness for those cockpits designed so that pilots can't see jack shit other than the clouds directly above them. You're definitely right that this laser pointer stuff we've been hearing about from pilots for the past 5 years is all made up.

Thank you contributing your valuable, insightful, sane perspective to this thread. Please continue to post comments in the future.

I was at an observatory, and one of the scientists warned people with those little pocket laser/pointer things, not to shine them at planes b/c they will blind the pilots.
We were surprised to hear that, but one of the people in the observatory was a retired pilot who confirmed the fact.
