If I'm listening to the radio, I turn the channel. If I'm watching TV, I either mute the volume or scan the channels, but rarely watch them or listen to them. When I do, I can usually confirm to myself why I try not to pay much attention to them. Yes, I understand the economics of TV and radio and the necessity of advertising. However, I'm sick of the manipulative, loud, and downright stupid antics just to sell me their junk.
Here's an example: one commercial (I didn't realize it was a commercial at first) caught my eye which showed a nice, family vehicle driving down the road. It showed the mom in the passenger seat, looking back at the kids who were playing travel games in the back seat. It looked pleasant enough and at the time I wasn't sure if it was a commercial or the program since I was channel surfing. There was no sales pitch at first. Then suddenly, a truck slams right into the mom's door and the scene temporarily goes black. A local lawyer then appears on the screen advertising his law firm which handles personal injury type cases.
Radio is another issue, those commercials are all annoying, especially when the station talks over or cuts off a song. I refuse to listen to those at all.
Internet: does anyone in their right mind click on a pop-up ad? I close them immediately, before they can fully load, if I can. |

They're generally quite harmless to adults because our minds have fully developed and so are better able to cope with them. The problem comes when you expose children to commercials. |
