How a Joule Thief Works
RimstarOrg

Published on Jul 5, 2012

Step-by-step run through of how a Joule Thief circuit works. Includes how all the parts, the 1.5 volt AA battery, the resistor, the transistor and the ferrite core with its two coils of wire work together to build up energy in a magnetic field which then collapses to produce enough voltage and current to light an LED (Light Emitting Diode.) This includes explanations of the feedback that rapidly opens the transistor between base and emitter to open up the emitter to collector too. And also the feedback that slams the transistor shut again.

ANYONE WHO WANTS THE CIRCUIT DIAGRAM, IT IS RIGHT HERE IN THE DESCRIPTION. This little circuit takes in 1.5 volts and puts out 120 volts high frequency DC to run different lightbulbs or to charge batteries. VERY useful for power outages. I do say AC numerous times in the video because I am too lazy to say "high frequency DC." version 2.0: [link to i42.tinypic.com]

Joule Thief from PC Power Supply
Geo Schoonmaker

Published on Jan 8, 2014

In my last video, I opened a computer power supply in search of components. I found a PNP transistor, a LED, and a toroid core - all the ingredients needed for making a joule thief.

With a couple strands of wire from a old telephone cord to wind on the toroid core, this project was free to do and actually worked on the first try. It was powered by one of the "dead" batteries that came with my new camera.

Pretty cool project - getting a LED to light from a dead battery. There is a lot of room for improvement with this circuit. Build one yourself and see how much you can tweak it for efficiency.

Edison Battery Construction Nickel Iron

Uploaded on Jul 16, 2009

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Thanks to the help of a Phd battery expert, I have massive improvements now to the cell. These are available here: [link to www.noonco.com]
Now back to our regular description: This video shows how to construct an experimental Edison Battery.
These remarkable batteries were developed by Edison in 1901, and many of his batteries more than 70 years old were still producing full capacity.
I'm working on a web page to back up this video with more details.

WARNING: hexavalent chromium look into this
before you start making Hydrogen with Stainless Steel.
I do not know if it is a factor, but possibility demands some due diligence.

warning about using stainless steal in Hydrogen liberator devices.

Chrome can become free and may be toxic due to chemical reaction.

So can I power and heat my house with 4 D-cells and a Joule Thief?
 Quoting: Copperhead

I am sure your post is ironic and you are right. A Joule Thief circuit is not creating energy out of thin air, so it won't heat a house out of 4 D-cells. It's just increasing the voltage of low voltage sources (like a dried-out battery) in order to give usable voltages and squeeze any left-over energy out from the battery. It is also not good to fully discharge a rechargeable battery. Anyone who thinks that this is a magical circuit, they should study power electronics and learn what a voltage boost converter is. There is no magic and no free energy, but the truth is that these power supplies (pulse switching mode) have usually a good efficiency. All of you have one power supply that works in similar way in your computer, but it just converts by switching a rectified voltage from AC to a some stable DC levels (12,5 and 3.3V DC for supplying the motherboard/CPU/PCI cards, HDD, etc etc etc).

Re: Joule Thief Circuit Converts 12VDC to 120V Pulse DC to Power incandescent, halogen, CFL and LED bulbs for HEAT and Light
This circuit is not new. It's a type of inverter commonly known as a DC Blocking Oscillator. It was popular for battery powered emergency lighting in the 60's/70's but was eventually replaced by sinewave Class-D inverters which are more efficient and easier on the switching transistors. And, of course, it's not a 'free energy' device by any means: Power out = 85%-90% of power in typically.

The one with a battery will work. The rest are fake.

Power over unity is impossible and a scam. You can't even get a patent on such a device without it running, guarded for 1 year, to prove it's real.

Got a patent for any of this? NO? The F off.

Depends on what type of rechargeable battery.
Never fully discharge a lead acid, lithium ion, lithium polymer.
Fully discharging a nickel metal hydride and a nickel cadmium is actually good for it. Nickel batteries like to be cycled.

Re: Joule Thief Circuit Converts 12VDC to 120V Pulse DC to Power incandescent, halogen, CFL and LED bulbs for HEAT and Light
Nothing is free in the world of electricity.

Stepped-up voltage = stepped-down current.

In most circuits you would be very lucky to get:

Pout = Pin * .90

Simple step-up transformer with a 1 to 10 ratio:

Rprimary = 100ohms - Rsecondary = 1000ohms

Vprimary = 120V - Rsecondary = 1200V

Iprimary = 120V / 100ohms = 1.2A,
Isecondary = (primary current / step up ratios) =
1.2A / 10 = .12A

Pprimary = 120V * 1.2A = 144 watts,
Psecondary = 1200V * .12A * .9(approx efficiency factor) =
129.6 watts.
