Heat, drought cook fish alive in Pacific Northwest
I'm SOOOOO sick of the heat we have had this year. This is the hotest summer ever recorded up here. Everything is dieing because of the lack of rain....

I wish it would rain. I never thought I would say that living up here....

Freakishly hot, dry weather in the Pacific Northwest is killing millions of fish in the overheated waters of the region's rivers and streams.

“We’ve lost about 1.5 million juvenile fish this year due to drought conditions at our hatcheries,” Ron Warren of Washington State's Department of Fish and Wildlife said in a statement. “This is unlike anything we’ve seen for some time."

Sockeye salmon losses in the Columbia River due to the heat are in the hundreds of thousands, said Jeff Fryer, senior fishery scientist with the river's Inter-Tribal Fish Commission. The fish were returning from the ocean to spawn when the "unprecedented" warm water killed them, he said.

Water temperatures in the Columbia River — part of which runs along the border of Oregon and Washington — reached the low 70s shortly after July 4, something that doesn't usually happen until August, if at all, Fryer said.

High temperatures — coupled with the low water levels — can be lethal to fish, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. With no end to the drought in sight, there could be additional fish die-offs, said Rod French, a fish biologist with the department.

Dead and distressed sockeye salmon found earlier this month in the Deschutes River in Oregon likely came from the Columbia River and were bound for other locations before they swam into the Deschutes in search of cooler water, the department said. Early pathology results suggest they died from columnaris, a bacterial infection typically associated with high water temperatures and/or low levels of dissolved oxygen.

Truly weird for the PNW. Used to live in Seattle and rain/drizzle was pretty consistent even in summer. Currently in Houston its hot and sticky as satan's balls around these parts and the same thing. No rain. Up until about 2 months ago we were getting ridiculous amounts of rain every week with flooding etc... Not a drop for some time now. Except literally a 2 minute rain storm a couple of days ago.

You used to have a sunny May and then light rain through June and sunny July. Basically, 90+ degrees since May with ZERO rain. Forecast, the same for August....

Heading to Italy today where I hear it is also hot sticky satan's balls. Not looking forward to that.

Re: Heat, drought cook fish alive in Pacific Northwest
how do you think thay control the jet stream

cool air rushes to fill the void left by warm air rising...

there are maps that show this in weather underground site.

harrp is used to super heat an area, on land and on water, so that winds can be direected...

there is a youtube video showing scorched fish right out of the water...this was in the middle east...

read about 'ground based cloud seeding', I see it all the time here in my state

I have looked by satilite at the pipes burried on the hill sides near my valley

I don't have tiem to explain to you how to find the information...

I know what I know, I am not a rocket scientist so I knwo others can find the info as well.

knwo this

our weather will never be the same
you will have to grow your own food, you will have to be ready for any type of wather...

ur weather is screwed because it is mostly man made...

read it and weep

It's not just because of lack of rain. Our snow fall was way below average this past winter, in the PNW.

Low snow, but that can't fix our NO rain in the summer. My normally green grass is dead brown. I have even noticed a lot of the forest flora is dying too.

Hot temperatures kill 5,400 trout in state hatchery

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Washington State's record high temperatures and low water levels are causing yet another massive fish die off -- this time at a state fish hatchery near Bellingham.

Fish hatcheries help counter the human impact on natural fish populations. People have had to rely on them more and more. But at a hatchery near Bellingham, more than 5,000 trout are dead. Some can still be seen dying. Only a few hundred trout survive.
