If it's said in ignorance we usually try to explain. If American insists, it could turn quite ugly for the most part. There's also a different interpretation, that is more correct in wider historical perspective: "Soviet Union have won the Great War for Homeland, defeating Nazi Germany and helped United States to defeat Militaristic Japan in Pacific War.
