Who do you or most Russians consider to be a true hero?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69857276

If I have to choose... The Unknown Soldier.
[link to img-fotki.yandex.ru]
WW2 - The Great Patriotic War - or rather "The Great War for Homeland" was just to great to pick one or two heroes.
That's why they are all celebrated collectively:
"Your name is unknown, your deed is immortal"
 Quoting: Tamonten

That is a good answer. How do Russians feel when Americans say they won WW2.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69857276

Depending.
If it's said in ignorance we usually try to explain.
If American insists, it could turn quite ugly for the most part.

There's also a different interpretation, that is more correct in wider historical perspective: "Soviet Union have won the Great War for Homeland, defeating Nazi Germany and helped United States to defeat Militaristic Japan in Pacific War. But US was the sole victor of World War 2 as a country which benefited from this war the most."
 Quoting: Tamonten

Too true, well stated.

We used to have a substitute teacher in primary school who was from Russia. He was old and mean and used to tell us depressing stories about having to line up for 10 hours for a loaf of bread and he used to scream at us "you have to work like dogs" lol. He's the only Russian I've ever met in real life. You seem cool tho. peace

Nigel Farage mentioned once that journalists go missing in Russia.

Is the KGB still as much in control of free speech as before?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51892828

Here's one of the recurring misconceptions which made me to create this thread...

For once, there's no KGB now. It was renamed FSB (Federal Security Service) and don't manage media. We have a bunch of other services to do this work (RosComNadzor - Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications) and they just monitor content to be appropriate: blocking extremist and porn sites and other such things. Cases are passed to FSB only in the case of uncovering some serious extremist organizations.

There are of course some journalist disappearing, being suppressed and other vile things. But none of that is by hand of Federal government, I assure you.
As a rule, if some journalist is prone to seek dirt, he'll be seeking it everywhere. If you look closely at the journalists that were allegedly "disposed of because they were targeting Putin", you'd see that they were investigating mafia, corruption on municipal level and many other things. They had a lot of enemies, but when they are finally murdered, Western and Western-aligned MSM blame their death to Putin personally without any other thought.
 Quoting: Tamonten

I call bs. You think you are free what did Gorbachev say he avocated? Democracy and socialism thats not freedom. And once more president bush stated. There is no greated advocate of perestroika( gorbachevs book) then the president of the united states. And the events that took place after.. There is astong case to be made that the soviets never died . millions of people didnt just wake upone morning and change there ideology. Instead they adapted. Infiltated america with the help of other countrys. And turned her into a place we all hate that the world hates. And spread a bunch of ccommunist tested propaganda ro confuse us. This is a plan to uultimately destroy america from within. How can you not believe that? Its documented extensively. Tou should read the naked communist its writin by a former fbi aagent and everything is referenced with the soviets own teachings.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 60283613

Your English is making my head spin...

There's one faulty in your logic: by the end of 80s Soviet ideology was not only dead, but also decomposed, leaving only a skeleton that was clothed in rich clothing. There was no need for people to "wake up with another ideology", they've already lost all of it.

I agree that US and EU are following SU footsteps in their degradation. But there's different explanation for this. I don't know who suggested it first, but I've heard it from Dmitriy Kulikov on Russian radio. The theory is that it was actually a social model that is a natural successor to capitalism, but somehow managed to show itself in Russia before its time.

Was he from Leningrad? Then it could very well be a real trauma of his. During Leningrad Blockade more than 600k of people starved to death there.

We may seem to be overly serious and sometimes too hung up to our past, but when you lose 15% of country population in 4 years, it tend to remain in historical memory for some time.

There's ongoing joke about Belarus and Lukashenko: "If you give the farmer a country to rule, he'll turn the country into a farm".

Seriously though, Lukashenko with major Russian financial help managed to, well, manage a country that is a wild mix of state capitalism and socialism. Some kind of miniature China on steroids. Not a bad country to live, but the state that will fail the moment when the pipeline is severed.
My prognosis based mostly on intuition is that Belarus will exist as an entity as long as Lukashenko has enough energy and will to support this charade.

But in historical perspective Belarus have more claims to be a independent state than Ukraine for example. After all, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was mostly there - never mind the contemporary Lithuania.

Did you know that Russian aristocracy were raised by French tutors and spoke French?

So possibly France is the real power behind Russia?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51892828

There's a joke on this matter:

In 18th century Russians admired France and studied French... and in the beginning of 19th gave a beating to Napoleon.
In the beginning of 20th century Russians studied German... and fought Hitler all the way to Berlin.
Now we are studying English. For the first time in history we have such variety of choises!

Anyways, our Zionist controlled propaganda media machine makes your country look stupid. But in fact we know the opposite is true.

Well, unlike times of Cold War, we can have some direct conversation here. Also there are Russian media working on English and some other languages. you can always have a different perspective by reading Sputnik or watching RT.
This stage of Great Game is on completely different ground that the previous ones.

I don't see any restrictions that are worth of mentioning. There's a plenty of alternative opinions - even if those newspapers and other media are not popular and have some financial problems accordingly.
I've already answered about religion some time ago: everything is fine as long as you are not harming anyone. I can't imagine someone erecting a satanic statue though. Not in public place at least.

There's a religious complex in Otradnoye district of Moscow where on the one spot of land Orthodoxal church, synagogue and mosque are standing together, huh.

And the main mosque ( [link to www.google.ru (secure)] ) is being built in just a kilometer from Cathedral of Armenian Othodoxes ( [link to www.google.ru (secure)] ).
Russia can manage multiculturalism just fine.

No. But your "question" has a faulty at the very beginning.
To "overthrow" Putin you need some force stronger than him. Meaning - military coup. And I've described what will happen then.

It depends on how you define better.
Was our life better than life of Europeans under the reign of their kings? Yes. There's a number of evidences.
Was it better before Revolution than after this? Yes, of course. Revolution always a catastrophe.
Was it better then in 30s under Stalin? Can't say for sure. Some lived better, some worse.
Was it better then in 70s? No, it would be ridiculous.
Would have it been better if Russian monarchy was not overthrown and Russia was successfully reformed and modernized without any revolutions? My opinion - yes. But, sadly, it did not happen.

That was the idea when the Tsar abdicated in favour of his brother, that the government of the Empire would be reformed as a constitutional monarchy similar to what England has.

Are the Russian people aware that US Federal Reserve bankers financed the Bolsheviks and that trillions of dollars (in today's money) of Russian overseas assets changed hands?

Kind of like the whole fake ISIS thing going on now.

I thought last week when I saw you post, how interesting it would be if you made a thread about Russia - and you did! u2efine

I read the whole thing - so very interesting Tamonten.

I have always wanted to go to this place, could it possibly be this beautiful?

Valley of the Geysers:

Well, I thought the same. There are so many things I can tell, but it's almost always an off-topic with some vague connection to the threads I visit at best.

Photos are of course somewhat edited and you shouldn't expect every corner of it to be as beautiful. But this Valley is definitely one of the most precious natural wonders of Russia - along with Altay mountain range, Baikal lake and others.

Are you hot? I love russian accents.

I dated a russian, but we ended up argueing too much since he was in the states working for the government on unmanned military robots.

How difficult is it for an american to move to russia?

How should I answer it? O_o I'm baffled, honestly.

The main difficulty is finding work here. Without working visa it's almost impossible to settle in most of the countries, so it's always a first step.

Answer by posting a photo in the glp member photos thread.
Mines there, on the last page or two ;)
