Venezuela faces beer shortage amid heat wave

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelans are facing the prospect of a heat wave without their favorite beer, the latest indignity in a country that has seen shortages of everything from disposable diapers to light bulbs.

Cerveceria Polar, which distributes 80% of the beer in the socialist South American country, began shutting down breweries this week because of a lack of barley, hops, and other raw materials, and has halted deliveries to Caracas liquor stores.

They are also facing shortages of basic food supplies, basic household needs that you mentioned, and other beverages such as clean water, milk, etc. There have already been food riots which the government meets with unrelenting military control.

South Sudan close to economic collapse due to long standing civil war, soaring inflation, and extreme famine in some areas. Upwards of 2,5000,000 people are considered in desperate need of food as the civil war prevents relief agencies moving into the hardest hit areas, as well as crops not being able to be planted nor harvested.

Iceland's got a volcano problem -- and it's only going to get worse

Iceland’s longest volcanic eruption ever finally came to an end in February after erupting for six straight months.

Iceland has always been a volcanically active island, but climate change and the world’s resulting melting ice will make things worse.

Reunion's 'shark crisis': when will it be safe to go back into the water?

Reunion is pioneering a range of new ways of stopping shark attacks, in a bid to lose the grim distinction of being the world's most deadly island. But will it be enough to encourage people back in the water?

The precise moment when Ludovic Villedieu finished his final surf class is etched onto his memory. It was July 23, 2012, and the surfing instructor had taken a group of children out to Trois Bassins, on the west coast of the island of Reunion. At 3.45pm the class returned to the shore, tired and happy.

“Forty five minutes later, Alexandre was killed,” said Mr Villedieu. “Right where we were.”

Thanks Gomez! hf Just been really busy with kids going back to school but I sneak in when I can. So grateful I found Jazzy's thread today! cheer

Weird side note I want to add. We had a lot of rain and thunderstorms in AZ today on and off through out the day. But at one point while I was driving in Gilbert it came down so fast and heavy that it was a complete white out. For somewhere between 2-3 minutes myself and all the other cars on the road had to completely stop where we were and wait. I have never experienced that here. In a WI snow storm yes, but in AZ due to rain no. It was both intense and strange. For my daughter it was the first time she had ever experienced something like that. She just kept saying 'I can't see. I can't see anything!' The volume of rain that came down in those few minutes was unreal.
 Quoting: SkinnyChic

Sounds like a typical Fall or Winter shower in Seattle.

On the freeway, a lot of times in heavy rain, mostly in the Winter, you can't see well at all. Everything is just a wet grey blur. Even with the wipers on high speed. Everyone just sorta slows to like 35 and you just hope its alright. That's when you realize how important it is for everyone to have lights lights on.
 Quoting: no 1 deanoZXT

Exactly Deano. hfTypical for other places but not here. Even with wipers and lights we all had to stop. Things be changing. hiding

'Spectacular' meteor showers to light up the sky

Paris (AFP) - The Perseid meteor shower -- an annual display of natural fireworks -- should be particularly spectacular this year, with extra-dark skies expected to create optimal stargazing conditions, astronomers said Friday.

When the celestial show hits its peak overnight Wednesday next week, up to 100 shooting stars per hour will streak across the sky for a spectacle visible around the globe.

Myanmar floods: Death toll rises to 88 as heavy monsoon devastates South-East Asia

The death toll from severe flooding across Myanmar has risen to 88, officials say, as rising waters swallow more homes in low-lying regions in some of the poorest parts of the country.

More than 330,000 people have so far been affected by torrential monsoon rains that triggered flash floods and landslides and cut off communications as roads and bridges were destroyed.

Drought affects shipping on River Danube, but no disruptions

BUCHAREST, Romania — Romanian authorities say a severe drought is affecting shipping on the River Danube but ships are still managing to navigate along Europe's second longest waterway.

Florin Boboc, a port captain in the southern city of Giurgiu told The Associated Press Friday that vessels are loading less because the water is shallower. The river fell to 90 centimeters (35 inches) Friday in Galati, the largest Danube port, almost 5 meters (16.4 feet) below warning levels.

Men’s Fashion Is Headed for a Gender-Bending Moment Unseen Since the ’70s

In January, Gucci’s menswear runway collection was an eye-opener. It wasn’t because the brand had just fired its nearly decadelong creative director Frida Giannini in December, or even because new designer Alessandro Michele had pulled the clothing together in less than a week in his new role.

It was because the men on the runway looked ... like women.

Target Corp. is removing gender labels from most of its children’s departments after customers complained about signs designating certain toys for girls.

The kids’ bedding section will no longer feature boy and girl signage, and the toy department will be without labels and pink or blue paper on the shelves, Minneapolis-based Target said on its website Friday. Gender labels will remain in the kids’ clothing section because of sizing and fit differences.
