Small military drone found Outer Banks!!

That is a laser designator I believe for remote identification of targets US MIL property no doubt.

What kind of targets would need to be remotely identified in this area?

If half of the weight of this aircraft was LiPo batteries, and it could cruise at 50 mph, I would estimate a 6 hour flight time or 300 miles round trip.

Likely it would be used within 100 miles of the target... imagine some DHS thug programming a bunch of GPS coordinates of Tea Party types, then giving it a launch. Comes back in a few hours with fresh photos.

The laser designator is quite troubling. They only use those on targets they want to blow up. I know of no other use.

Nope not military and not some top secret, noaa and usgs use these we have a few here in sc. I work at noaa and they won't even care they have it. Also nooooooooooo retards not a laser tracking system get out of the basement. It is flir system, like heat but for patterns in the oceans. Topo is its main goal.

So its not "aimable", and that gimbal is simply to keep it pointed straight down while the small plane flops around in the wind?

yep NOAA is listed as one user. No that is NOT a FLIR mount. note it IS NOT forward looking--those are mounted outside airframes or forward

I believe they use hydrophones and remotely placed submergable seismos for that. This device would not penetrate to the seafloor
