Bought wood for the wood stove Goal zero solar panel and Yeti 150 battery Hot plate That's what I've done in the last week. Most of the essentials i already have. if things get worse by the 1st of Sept, I'll take $400-500 to Aldis and get some more food. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 63516393 United States 08/21/2015 01:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Going to get some of the blue 55 gallon food-safe drums to add to the two we already have. Sanitized and filled with fresh water they will stay good a long time. We also have water filtration units to safely utilize rainwater - it does not rain from June 1 to Dec 1 here most years, so that's a seasonal opportunity only. Could use more long term storage food. Need to get busy with processing supermarket food using mylar and O2 absorbers as I have done in the past. Some canned food also. Got about all the guns and ammo we could ever use, plus enough to arm any allies that need them. Shouldn't need anything more in that dept. Got some work to do on the BOV, normal maintenance and repair type stuff. The whole plan hinges on 100% reliability in that dept and right now that is lacking. In the process of negotiating an arrangement with someone who owns some undeveloped rural property, so there is somewhere outside the metro area where we will be welcome and our presence legitimate. Have a friend in the medical industry who is going to teach several of us how to suture. Need to revisit the antibiotic stash and shore up anything needed. Probably need to inventory the bandage situation, any kind of serious wound needs dressing changed frequently, and it's easy to go through a ton of gauze easily. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 63516393 United States 08/21/2015 01:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Gasoline - pretty good there, have 100 gallons on hand in containers. Need to rotate some though... the 33 gallon truck tank is about 2/3ds empty so I could rotate the oldest 4 containers and refill. Generators - pretty set there, just had an oil change earlier this year. Should probably get another bottle of fuel system cleaner to be on the safe side. Already got solar panels installed on the travel trailer and upgraded most of the on-board systems. I would like to upgrade the interior lighting to LED so it's more efficient. Also need to check the electrolyte level in the on-board battery bank, top up if needed. Do need to get out to the range again soon... been busy this year and skills get rusty if not used frequently. Arranging a range-day with some friends for the end of this month. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 63516393 United States 08/21/2015 01:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Finally got a replacement for the big dog we lost 2 years ago. The new guy is not so big yet but growing like a weed and learning fast. He should be a credible deterrent by around October or so. Best of all is the gathering of like-minded friends. People that can be counted on, who have valuable skills to contribute. We need a chance to work together more to build more team spirit, but that will come along in time I am pretty sure. No matter how prepared you are it always seems like it is never enough. But we have done what we can do with what we had. We're better off than 99 percent of people I think. Even so, you can't fool yourself into thinking you have it made, and become complacent. You still need to be on your game, and maybe even catch a few lucky breaks, to make it through a real SHTF situation. There are no guarantees, all you can do is better your odds. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 63516393 United States 08/21/2015 01:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The one thing that has really lapsed is the radio gear. I got my General license but haven't put time into actually putting the skills to use. I have a "ham" setup but it is sitting neglected at the moment. Hopefully a couple of new friends with similar interests will help me get that revived. Perhaps at some point we can establish a ham station at the BOL so that it can be occupied part time and stay in touch with the home base a 2-3 hour drive away. In case of a "slow crash" it might be advisable to pre-position some gear and personnel there while others have to maintain a local presence to keep income stream alive. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 63516393 United States 08/21/2015 03:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Uh, any specifics on that? LOL. I'm remembering Repo Man where the guy pulls a frozen package out of the freezer that is generic label that says "FOOD". Purina Human Chow or what? C'mon people share what you're working on. We're also working on getting a little cash-stash for last minute needs. Small bills, nothing large that won't break for change easily. I had to sell off some things and set aside some cash I had intended to use for something else, and chose not to. Well, some sacrifices must be made, right? This little nest egg will help with achieving some of the other goals. Got a little bit of silver... had more previously but sold a bunch to fund something we needed more. In retrospect that was a good call, as the price has tanked since. Still got some in pre-64 quarters and dimes though, recognizable to any idiot who knows what silver currency actually is. I said previously "guns & ammo" was pretty much handled but that's not entirely true. We have a couple of Yugo SKS rifles - a 59/66 and a 69 that aren't shooting due to what I believe is a re-assembly error. Need to get those apart and figure out what's gone wrong because they both have the same malfunction after having been shot (operating perfectly) then disassembled for cleaning. Need to sit down with the manual and work through it step by step. We have better guns than these, but these are great fall-back or loaner rifles. Hey, is anyone else out there even trying? LOL. Or just really tight-lipped? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 63516393 United States 08/21/2015 03:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | C'mon people share what you're working on. Hey, is anyone else out there even trying? LOL. Or just really tight-lipped? :mmdatamine: Everything I have and am doing is perfectly legit, above-board and legal. I'm not worried someone's going to trace back an anonymous post on a web board. If anyone showed up here intending harm they'd have more on their hands than they'd want to deal with, I assure you. And if things are so crazy that I don't have recourse to the legal system we will be long gone from this AO anyway for greener pastures. So to put it frankly, I'm not worried about saying what I'm working on, especially if it helps motivate or inspire others to get off their duff and work on their OWN plans and their own situation. The more of us are ready for something, the easier it will be for all of us. That's the idea here, share, encourage, motivate. |

User ID: 63304242 United States 08/21/2015 06:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In all seriousness I've been studying civilian life of World War 2 Britain and have been getting some really ingenious tips & ideas for prepping and living in (somewhat) limited conditions Of course, sh*t hitting the fan these days would be heinously worse; in WW2 England their success and survival depended upon everyone pulling together... ...and in our present scenario, the chances of being attacked by a fellow American is exceedingly high (sad, huh?) - Then there's nukes and all manner of new horrors we have these days... In particular there are a couple old BBC documentary-type reality shows that are fascinating (for a prepper) WW2 England is recreated, complete with rationing, home invasion, blackouts, trying to obtain food/clean water , growing/storing food, keeping animals, trying to keep up morale, etc, ... ...and people then try living daily life under those circumstances. I've learned loads about gardening, cooking with limited supplies et al... I'll post the links here if anyone's interested, they're easily available on YouTube since they're more than 10 years old. |
