"You" being the politician in question of course. You're running for a public office. You have NO right(s) to stay totally private. Of course this has limits, but when you're running for office the public has every right to know your opinions and beliefs about almost anything and everything. It's not right for the public to rip apart any of your beliefs and opinions though. On the other hand, it's a matter of getting to know your politician in such a way or ways that allow you to building actual trust and even friendships with. Too bad too many politicians just want to rule you mind, body, and soul instead of seeing you as who and what you really are. I'm not sure I'm understanding what your opinion is versus what you acknowledge is the current reality. We agree that there are limits to how far the public should be able to intrude into the private lives of public officials AND those seeking to become public officials. Tweets aren't private. They could serve as the definition of "public". Twitter has decided that private citizens are allowed to delete their public statements on Twitter's platform, and now they've decided the same should be true for everyone, even those who are using Twitter as a function of their public office. I propose that the same rules which apply to newspapers and broadcasters publishing recordings of comments made by those running for office and in office should apply to tweets as well. You can't take back making a fool of yourself on the Today Show, you shouldn't be able to on Twitter either. aHEMagain Great point and a great thread. +5 |

(OP) User ID: 70095408 United States 08/24/2015 09:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What if you made a reaction video to the tweet? That couldn't be a copyright violation... As long as you didn't put it up on YouTube or anywhere else you would be fine. Otherwise, Twitter could choose to sue you for copyright violation if you showed an image of the tweet. It's also of limited utility to have saved copies of deleted tweets, or screen captures of tweets, since they can't be verified. How many faked or doctored images of tweets have we seen on GLP. We just keep running up against the problem of Twitter being a private company in reality, which is also serving a public role by public officials as a method of communication. Of course, Twitter hasn't taken anyone to court for violating their copyrighted material yet, it isn't even clear whether they would or not. It isn't necessary. By removing API access, people have to judge anyone's claimed copy of a deleted tweet based on the claimants credibility. It's a free pass to politicians to shout whatever they want in "Town Square" and never be held accountable for it. aHEMagain "And once again, Probability proves itself willing to sneak into a back alley and service Drama as would a copper piece harlot." -- Vaarsuvius, The Order of the Stick [link to tvtropes.org] "History doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme" -- Mark Twain "It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence.-- William Clifford [link to myweb.lmu.edu] |

[link to blogs.loc.gov] ============================= The Library and Twitter: An FAQ April 28, 2010 by Matt Raymond ----------------------------- ... What is in the Archive? Twitter has been a public and open communications platform since its beginning. Twitter is donating an archive of what it determines to be public. Private account information and deleted tweets will not be part of the archive. Linked information such as pictures and websites is not part of the archive, and the Library has no plans to collect the linked sites. There will be at least a six-month window between the original date of a tweet and its date of availability for research use. ... ----------------------------- [link to blogs.loc.gov] ============================= ============================= Update on the Twitter Archive at the Library of Congress January 4, 2013 by Erin Allen ----------------------------- ... In April 2010, the Library and Twitter signed an agreement providing the Library the public tweets from the company’s inception through the date of the agreement, an archive of tweets from 2006 through April 2010. Additionally, the Library and Twitter agreed that Twitter would provide all public tweets on an ongoing basis under the same terms. The Library’s first objectives were to acquire and preserve the 2006-10 archive; to establish a secure, sustainable process for receiving and preserving a daily, ongoing stream of tweets through the present day; and to create a structure for organizing the entire archive by date. This month, all those objectives will be completed. We now have an archive of approximately 170 billion tweets and growing. The volume of tweets the Library receives each day has grown from 140 million beginning in February 2011 to nearly half a billion tweets each day as of October 2012. The Library’s focus now is on addressing the significant technology challenges to making the archive accessible to researchers in a comprehensive, useful way. These efforts are ongoing and a priority for the Library. ... Although the Library has been building and stabilizing the archive and has not yet offered researchers access, we have nevertheless received approximately 400 inquiries from researchers all over the world. ... ------------------------------- [link to blogs.loc.gov] =============================== Still waiting, since Jan. 2013. As far as I can tell, they still haven't allowed researchers access. Also, the fact deleted tweets aren't included keeps this from being a substitute for what the Open State Foundation offered. aHEMagain "And once again, Probability proves itself willing to sneak into a back alley and service Drama as would a copper piece harlot." -- Vaarsuvius, The Order of the Stick [link to tvtropes.org] "History doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme" -- Mark Twain "It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence.-- William Clifford [link to myweb.lmu.edu] |
