Re: Preparation for Power Outages in Winter
OP,

Heating with a gas stove = BAD IDEA

The little magic candle pot heaters? BS. Basic thermodynamics.

Your best option is to get a small catalytic heater that really is safe to run indoors WITHOUT opening a window and defeating the purpose of heating in the first place. This is an excellent unit:

[link to www.amazon.com]

Then start buying the gas-grill type propane tanks... you can get them anywhere, carry them in one hand, and store them indoors, out of sight if need be. Get an extension hose so you can put the tank in another room if that makes you more comfortable.

A gas grill tank will run one of these heaters for a couple days, easy. This is the only SAFE & PRACTICAL method I am aware of to heat a small living space in a city environment. No fumes, no smoke, no noise.

Be safe & stay warm. ;-)
 Quoting: Azaziah

Basic thermodynamics aside, I know of a case where some of our air base employees who left a northern tier military base to try and make it home in a blizzard -100 F chill factor survived 3 days in their car trapped in that blizzard, and having some long burning candles gave them that extra few degrees of heat that made a difference in the car I have always carried survival blanket ( Mylar) , fire making and candles in my car ever since and sell car emergency survival kits at craft fairs...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69732513

I will add those to my car emergency supplies. I already have blankets but no candles. Thanks!

Re: Preparation for Power Outages in Winter
Last winter, the temp went down below zero quite a few times here. We'd turn the heater completely off at night time just to save on the gas bill, and my wife and I and our two dogs would just all gather under the same thick comforter. Not sure if we're just extra warm-blooded or what, but that was all we needed. Warm sweats, a hoodie, and that comforter...

Re: Preparation for Power Outages in Winter
I know this will drop straight to the bottom of the heap as everyone is focused on the Dow right now.

I have talked about my concerns, living in the Midwest, and most people here have told me that I'm toast.

That's okay, except that I have two cats and two birds and an algae eater that I am concerned about more than the stock market.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who lives in a city or in a suburb or in a medium sized city. The majority of people live in metropolitan areas. Only a few may live rural enough to live in a house where they have the ability to run a wood stove. In the city we can't even burn leaves.

I'd just like to know what people will do if the electricity goes out in the winter and they live in a cold climate. Have you thought of it? The motels will fill up fast, if they have adequate generators. In most areas, I'm thinking that desperate people would steal their neighbor's generator. I have a kerosene heater but you must keep the window open and you can't fall asleep. It also wouldn't be good for my birds, I'm thinking. Perhaps someone knows better.

I'd just like some suggestions as I'm sure people have thought about this and even though it seems that people here either live in the south or in California, what about the Minnesotans and Michiganders, New Yorkers, etc. Any plans? Have you thought about it with all of the threats about an attack on our grid? False Flag attack on the grid, etc. ?
 Quoting: Isaiah 43:1-2

There's lots of Portable Propane heaters. Propane stores well get a couple of 20 lbs grill bottles and an adapter to fill the 2 # bottles from the bigger bottles.

Great post! I wish I had some advice but the wood stove is

all I got and I need to get one too, never did.

I'm sure they have them at Menards. I had one once but had to return it when there was no way to vent it without either sending smoke to the neighbors or back into my apartment.

I read some accounts of people who survived the war in Bosnia.. Proper Clothing & Blankets.. Small hobo / rocket stove that could burn anything vented out window for cooking.. The lady said in the end anything that could be burned took on value.. She said everything that could burned was taken and burned.. From Library books to demolished building to kids toys..
 Quoting: Eat-Me-Shill 69802421

What is a small hobo/rocket stove?
 Quoting: Isaiah 43:1-2

The one they showed was a 55 gallon drum on it's side up on cinder blocks.. They used heating vent pipe and ran it out the window for chimney.. She didn't build a fire in the drum because fuel was in short supply.. She had a smaller hobo stove / rocket stove in the end of the 55 drum and would cook on it.. the heat caused thermodynamic and the smoke was pulled outside.. kind of like this..

I do appreciate your concern for your well-being Op, kudos, but always remember: in any situation, a cool clear head is the greatest tool. Being in a city sucks, but can also be an asset. There is so muchaterial and so many good people to draw what you need from. Don't believe everyone wants to steal your stuff, there are more good loving people out there than not, and it is usually easy to tell. The news doesn't often tell the stories of people coming together in order to survive. It happens way more often than you seem to think, and frankly it doesn't sound like you have much survival stuff presently for someone to steal anyways ;).

My parents have a stand alone gas heater that they use in the wintertime because when it gets cold, that heat/cool pump will drive your electric bill through the roof.

I told my dad he needed to stock up on propane before the price goes up, I didn't mention any September doom because he's not into the conspiracy stuff.

Blankets, blankets, blankets!

Also, get a tent so you can clear your living room of furniture and set it up to sleep in. It will hold in body heat better than a large room.

The best investment is to reduce the energy need b heavily insulating at least one small room. Also use emergency tents to pad your walls. Worst case scenario you build a tent in the house, they get cheap in the winter. Superisulate that tent,u can stay warm from the heat of your body. About cookiny, cane sure you have a large thermos. This is the lowest energy intrnsiv method i found in preparing your food: put your ingredients in the thermos, fill it with boiling water, seal and wait for 3-4 hours. No smell no smoke, using camping alcohool stove.

If you collect you and your pets into one bedroom and close the door and light one candle, the warmth of the single candle will keep you from freezing to death and it cannot cause carbon monoxide poisoning (so you do not have to open a window).

I already have a stand alone 500 gallon propane gas tank, but I picked up a Troy-Bilt XP 7000-Running Watts Portable Generator yesterday just in case. Once upon a time, when people lived in caves or tents and had no access to power or gas they survived.

Buy blankets.

Buy good, heavy clothing.

Sleep with the cats. Cover the birds.

You'll survive.

Our ancestors survived with less wearing animal skins for cover.

sorry got distracted clicked send to soon, something I like to do is stay apprised of the weather situation and whenever a storm of any kind is heading your way fill the tub before a power outage might hit, this gives you good amount water to flush with...simply use a container to scoop out of tub and fill the back of toilet when a flush is needed

They said people would only be allowed enough food and water for, I think, a week or two. I don't know if that is true, but I sure don't want anyone from law enforcement stealing what I have. Are you around Chicago? I agree that God will take care of me, but I have to do what I can too. I also know that many of us will not survive the coming Tribulation and I ask God what to do all of the time and He hasn't answered. I'm "inclined" to prepare and that could be from Him, but I may be one of those who don't survive. But I'm going to give it my best shot. The biggest problem for me is being cold. I CANNOT TOLERATE IT! I GET SO DEPRESSED! So that is why I'm writing down all of these suggestions.

I prepared before Y2K and nothing happened, but we had a different president then and it may have just been a test. I don't know. But I know this president doesn't care about one of us and will do nothing to help or prevent a catastrophe.

Dimitru Duduman was told by the Lord that there would be a civil war going on. From what? A stock market crash? An EMP false flag? And he said that while the gov't is dealing with the civil war, Russia will attack. I can't even think about all of that. I just want to survive winter during the civil unrest or whatever happens. Spiritually, I'm ready and I believe that my home will be protected. But I need to take care of heat and cooking...AND COFFEE!!!!coffee4

Look up kandle heeter product, and research ways to make a room heater from clay pots and tea candles. You can store this stuff in a small place. If no doom you may be able to lower your energy cost this winter. Have really warm sleeping bag and blankets - focus on being able to keep one room space reasonably comfortable. Even have a tent to pitch in your home and that will help hold your body heat.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69732513

There are a lot of youtubes about the candle heaters, Unless you are heating a little room like a bathroom. However, they will not be able to bring the temp up near high enough to be "comfortable" if the temperature outside is freezing unlsss you have good insulation in your structure. I know, I tried it last winder 20 degrees out, in a poorly insulated structure. One candle did not make a dent in the cold.

You need to work this out ahead of time, depending on your structure and where you live. You may need a couple of these candle heaters. One thing I learned was DO NOT use those candles in a glass container, you want plain candles. The best luck I had was with a fancy multiwick candle.

The pillar candles will give you the most heat for the longest time. You can go to Salvation Army and get used ones now cheap. Make sure they are not too tall for your pot. Stock up now to make sure you have enough candle power to get you through.

I would not stake my life on tea candles.

You will also need warm clothes, a way to heat food/water, and of course warm bedding. You can order those little canned heats from Dollar Tree. The caterers use them to keep food warm. They will give you a couple of hours of alcohol flame for heating water and the like.

There are also smallpropane heaters that fit onto a little propane cylinder. Maybe somebody has used them and can tell how they work

I'm also wondering how people would keep their computers running. I have a radio that runs on batteries but I'd rather have my computer, of course?

I'm trying to think of ways to avoid a generator because I think someone would steal it, although, if they can't get gas for it, it won't be much good.

Also, I'd like more protection for my apartment. I have dead bolts but would like something more reassuring. Any suggestions? Thank you.
 Quoting: Isaiah 43:1-2

Glad you are thinking about these things for your animals.. I live in Northern Idaho and believe me it has been heavy on my mind for many many years. I love this area it is remote and it is lovely but the power goes out on a regular basis and now with these fires.. well it is a constant worry! I have horses and during cold weather they get blankets and the water is heated (power) so I have looked into solar generated single power heated troughs. Of course we have wood heat and such and live in the Country and have on many occasions had to go to Verizon Wireless to get to the web. That service will work even when the general power grid is down BUT in most cities wireless runs off of electricity.. so you are hosed no matter what! I suggest you get a hibachi which you can use with good ventilation and some nice size river rocks and use them to heat water. This is time intensive but will do the job...and of course the birds will get a couple and get covered with a "cage cozy". This takes some experimentation but it is how the Shaolin kept water flowing to their ponds centuries ago. Funny how this is all going to require going back in time to survive..

Re: Preparation for Power Outages in Winter
Blankets, blankets, blankets!

Also, get a tent so you can clear your living room of furniture and set it up to sleep in. It will hold in body heat better than a large room.

Get a dog or two or three if you like classic rock.

I don't understand, Fire In Cairo. A dog or two or three if I like classic rock?

It's a joke about classis rock. But he/she makes a point, dogs would be a great idea for additional heat sources and company. As long as you have enough food to feed them.

I know how dogs keep you warm. I just lost mine, sadly. I don't know about getting another. My cats are SO HAPPY NOW, LOL! But dogs do keep you warm!
