Do I take the dead bird and haggle to buy it if say he drops the price to 13.50 well the bird is then dead, having choked (in theory) and so the meat is not getting better by the minute, How long can a chicken be dead in my yard before going bad?? It's fine to suggest thing and share you knowledge but think it through, give us something to work with, something to chew on, mentally I mean. |

Never my intention to take over anything. I thought it might be apt to contribute since we seem to have some common memories. I get the feeling that if you were closer, we could be sitting on my back porch enjoying a cold one and swapping stories of the good old days. But its about 100 degrees on the porch right now and I don't feel like sitting out there. My flock of hens is dwindling and I thought about getting some little chicks earlier this year to add to it. But then I thought about heat lamps and having to babysit them for weeks and decided not to. You can pick them at 2-3 days old for a couple bucks each. Maybe better to spend $10-$12 at 3-4 months old and let somebody else do the nannying. What the Hell?... |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 51073754 United States 09/08/2015 07:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You do know that chickens can fly, don't you? Quoting: Masiro They will fly over your gate to get home... SMART! Other poster explained "Dude, shut your damn gate!" But see, I have to shut my gate cause my neighbors love me and come to my door for cake, money, whatnot, just because they need a friend. So, a gate is what a popular man sometimes has to put into play. Like, if I am washing my bod, I need not put up with the neighbors, I am a firm believer in not answering the door. However, my fence/gate is all 4" square fencewire and some chicken/cement wirefence as well, tastefully done, so I essentially roll my gate (hehe) and wire it open or closed. I can explain it sort of like this: "If there is one thing in this world I hate it is an unlocked footlocker, YOU KNOW THAT DON'T YOU??" What movie is that from? See, that's why I mention the gate/fence this, It is important to be a good neighbor, these replies say so, I agree. But being a good neighbor means also, leaving those around you the fuck alone, and asking the same, at times. LOL, but eggs, chickens and good neighbors are always welcome, everywhere. My chickens will fly over anything that short 4"(inches) you mean 4'(feet) and my chickens will fly over that too... My cure for Chicken thieves.... Two Pit bulls with a taste for anyone moving in my yard at night.... |

Exactly what I had thought, about 12 bucks but this bird was a full hen, so she's obviously something he values, and I ain't the type to get upset because his good life spills over, family and friends and chickens are always welcome, hehe I just thought this would be a fun thread GLP is like a skateboard park and threads are like pools, I drop into a lot of threads but rarely make them, and when I make one, I wish more cool skateboarders or people would come skate my pool. So well, your vista as a Californian is a lovely one. It's like you are painting with your words, I am good at words, but yeah, I see wisdom in the gentle useage of words. |

I love pit bulls lovely dogs, the nieghbor lets his wander into my yard, hehe, all of a sudden I hear foot traffic outside and it's his dog, lol neighbors! Fortunately dogs don't scare me and he's a baby, he just always wants to sneak out under the fence all guilty. Hehe, I try to calm him down but my headlight thing gets him nervous so I turn it up and am all blind tripping around cause I don't want to upset him. Hehe, if a neighbor saves a doggie from the pound, we here all try to support that, but, I am sure some of the forwardly oriented neighbors away from the edges of the park, wouldn't like him wandering up there, they have their dogs who bark when he comes around, You can't tell one neighbor his dog is waking up all the other dogs, it's just like, well, something dog owners deal with, and I don't have one, and he don't bark at all, so I love him, I love all dogs who don't bark, it's an enderaing quality. Seesh he only comes over because I leave cat food out for the two cats nearby, and he eats that! People don't feed or cage their animals and then I do, and then I have a frm of my own! I guess that's okay! As long as he's a nice pit bull, hehe You think people would tolerate it as I do? |

An inviting box or milk crate often seems preferable to laying in the same old nest box back in the coop. If your neighbor has a fruit tree with fruit-laden branches hanging on your side of the fence, you are within the law to pick such fruit that has invaded your space. If the neighbor doesn't want to share his tree's bounty, he can prune his tree so it no longer inconveniences you. Or, he could contain his chickens so they don't plunder your romas. If you walk out and find three eggs in a milk crate next to your shed, enjoy them. Just remember if of questionable origin or age, put them in a bowl and cover with water. If they sink, they are good. If they float, throw them onto the compost pile. Last Edited by Crunch62 on 09/08/2015 08:05 PM What the Hell?... |

This blows my mind, the eggs are the moneyball, Goat, you gettin this? 20 eggs in the wheelbarrow That is some serious serious cheddah. Keep in mind the timeframe over which said eggs were laid. A young hen will lay nearly one egg every 24 hours. Assuming it was the same hen laying in the wheelbarrow, it would have taken nearly 3 weeks to amass such a quantity and likely longer. Those eggs all got the float test and some were questionable. A few were definitely no-go. The moral of the story is to find your hens' egg stash sooner rather than later. Chicken eggs have a protective membrane on them, so washing them is only necessary if they are very dirty. They can sit on the counter for 3 weeks in moderate or cool temps without going bad. In the refrigerator, they are good for 2 months or more. What the Hell?... |
